A big clue that I am headed for a BSOD is when code 40 is showing, and Chrome or iTunes spontaneously closes for no real reason. A good chunk of the crashes (50%) have occurred when that happens. But it seems like some have happened if 24 is showing as well, but 40 seems to be the number. If A0 is showing, I can play games, surf the net, listen to iTunes, and the system is rock solid. Both times today, Chrome crashed, and I pre-emptively restarted the system, and A0 showed up, which means it is stable.

Now it seems that I get code 40 every single time I boot up from a shutdown, and one of the forums somewhere claimed that 40 means return from "s4 sleep state" whatever that means. Could it be that I need to change the BIOS setting from Legacy o/s to Windows 10?

A snip from the Event log. The errors are shown when 40 shows on the board. DCOM, whatever that is seems to be the culprit.

Error code 40 means the system was started from a Sleep Mode........not really an error but if you want to stop the 40 code then turn off "fast startup" and you will be back to the AO code providing you do not have any other problems.......

A vanilla installation is needed to troubleshoot the frequent Nvidia faulting applications reports and the recurrent Nvidia bsod on 8/10/2017 post clean install.

See if you can update the failure to load driver in post 124. It may reduce the likelihood of bsod before the vanilla installation.

Fast Boot has been off for a while.

I am almost positive now that the motherboard is the issue. It takes a reboot immediately after startup to clear the 40 code, and get to A0, and then the system is rock stable, not one issue. Just solid no matter what I throw at it. My daughter hammered the system for two days on Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Deus Ex:Mankind divided without a single hiccup following the directions to reboot to clear the 40 code, and get to A0. Wish me luck, I have an interview tomorrow for a promotion that I really, really want. Not much more money, but loads of job satisfaction, the kind of job you look forward to going to work for. I can't afford to replace the motherboard with an ASUS Crosshair Hero VI until September.

I went into BIOS since it appears that a "shutdown" only goes to a hibernation state, and changed ErP to the S5, and it made no difference. I also confirmed no Fast Boot.
