Also, are there some reasonably idiot proof instructions on how to proceed amongst the 101 pages of at thread?

thanks very much much for all your help

In the windows advance recovery menu you were able to test reset, restore, startup repair

What happens when you select startup options?

Reset and Restore don't work nor does Image recovery. Startup Repair fails and points me to error log. Startup Options (Settings?) allows me to restart to view the various further restart options but none of them do anything. See my post 6
    thanks

Sorry, but I don't really understand how to proceed with Kyhi's Custom recovery disk thread. Are there idiot proof instructions somewhere in the thread?

When Ive tried to boot from the ISO I created on my old XP machine from a usb flash or from dvd, it just hasn't loaded any options. Just goes straight back to "Preparing Automatic Repair", "Diagnosing your PC" followed by returning to Windows RE and "Your PC did not start correctly"
As I said, a friend is doing me a recovery USB using a windows 10 machine and he media creation tool but Im not optimistic it will make much difference
