Just wanted to say an enormous thank you to everyone who contributed to helping me get my computer back!

Ive just finished copying all my files back and everything seems to be present and correct. I realise we didn't really get to the root of the problem and resolve the acpiex.sys issue, but do I mark this thread as Solved anyway?

One final question, now that I'm back up and running, is there a guide on this site to maintaining a healthy computer? Ive tried searching but not really unearthed anything.

    Thanks again

    Your welcome.

Make sure you have backups of the files and or an image. Macrium is very popular.

There's a green solved button at the top.

Maintain your disk image sets, updating routinely.
Keep a simple record of changes made, including imaging dates.
Thus if you need to restore an image you've a quick way to repeat steps subsequent to the image being created.

    Suggestions:
Periodically use a program to check your disk (or you can leave it running monitoring SMART params continuously)

Use Ccleaner (I use it before updating my image (but not its registry cleaner- although that is one of the better ones) - logically it would be safer to use it after updating an image!)

    Run chkdsk occasionally.

Keep an eye on idle usage of CPU/disk/internet- task manager - occasionally.

    Be cautious about making changes.

There have been other threads about loss of a *.sys file- as to why- I can't recall any one reason. Remember storage isn't perfect- hard disks run on statistics and probability not absolute 1's and 0's, for example.
