So I've backed up my Docs, Videos, Pictures and Music folders and have started 'Install Now' but surprisingly it is offering me the option to 'Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings and apps' or 'Custom' where I presume everything is wiped. Given I now have a backup of the important stuff, should I choose the latter? Does 'upgrade' risk my dodgy registry file being retained?
    thanks

Main reason I ask is that Step 12 and 13 are a little over my head. I don't know if I want a BIOS or UEFI install as I don't really know what that means nor do I know if I should be deleting partitions...sorry

    See step 10:
Clean Install Windows 10 Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

If your BIOS supports UEFI that's the more recent 'better' option. But then the disk format must be GPT.

Ok Upgrade wasn't 'compatible' so have had to go with Custom.
Sorry but I've read steps 12 and 13 couple of times and I really don't know how to proceed and whether this is BIOS or UEFI and whether I should be deleting all these partitions first.

If you use Kyhi's disk and Minitool Partition Wizard you can explore (rt click, Explore) each partition you think might contain data you want and so discover whether you want to keep it.

Any partitions you don't want, you can delete.

Upgrade does not work booting from USB. As I said earlier the only option when booting from USB is to clean install.

If you have backed up your data then on the same screen as you showed delete all of the partitions. Highlight them one by one (by clicking on them) and then click delete (click on the red "X" underneath) until everything says "unallocated space".

Then click on "Next" and Windows will make the partitions it feels like and you can carry on.

The reason for your issue is (probably) a muddle from your loader thinking it is EFI and your boot files being BIOS (or the other way around). This is fixable but at this point I would delete everything and reinstall as it will be quicker.

    The fun continues.....
So I deleted all the partitions, installed and everything seemed fine up to the point where it required a restart only for it go back to the Install Now/Repair my computer screen. Clicking Install just takes me through all the same process again; choosing language, Windows 10 version etc. The only difference is now I have 2 nice partitions although when I select Partition 2 to install into it goes back through the same loop :-(
Should I be repairing/doing something else at this point?

Hi, I did suggest you try this:
    6. Check your disk
Still using Kyhi's disk, run HD Tune and post a screenshot of its GUI like this:
(See my post above). I.e. boot your PC from Kyhi's boot disk/DVD.

It's worth checking the disk is ok before spending a lot of time on this.

Another possibility might be there are still unnecessary partitions on the disk, although noted, you say not.

Hi, yeah sorry but I don't have another machine to hand with which to download Kyhi's disk.

I think I'm back on track anyway as I figured that as the USB was first in the boot list that the problem was when it was restarting it was just booting from that again. Seems a bit clunky but on the 3rd attempt, I pulled out the USB stick as it was about to restart and lo and behold it booted to set up.
Think I may have 3 versions of windows now in my new partition but I presume i can clean that up shortly one set up has completed.
