    Hmm...
You have definitely tried all of the many ideas that have been mentioned so far. You may be right, it might be a MOBO problem. The MOBO in question is the ASUS G73-JH, right?

Yes...& apparently from what I've read, it is a problem machine, but mostly the graphics card. Known for the vertical pinstripe screen, which is how this started a few weeks later.

I have the HDD in a case now (where my zip file is from), everything reads fine, files are there. When that HDD was in machine, it randomly could not find restore points in Safe Mode.

HDD in machine now (from Dell, which supposedly has a fried mobo 2 mos. ago) is now showing same behavior, no restore points & I know they are there. Had the Asus running perfectly for a week. What are the odds of 2 laptops from 2010 both having fried mobos?!

For now, IF I can get it to boot, can use Safe Mode with No Networking.

Anything I can try for diagnostics from that state?

    Thanks for reply.

If it's crashing on a Linux Live cd, e.g. Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora that would definitely indicate a hardware issue. If it does boot to a livecd, mount your hard drive and copy the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump\ and post it here.

I have just left it sit for the past week, turned it back on Sat. PM, & it's working again.

Lost my wireless mouse (trackpad is dead), so used old wired mouse. Now wireless mouse is back, & all is working.

    Still don't trust this machine...

I have been using a MacBook to run Win10 for the past week. Will keep using the Asus until something happens again. Thanks for suggestions & help.
