I'm having this problem primarily when I play GTA 5 in which I get an occassional BSOD with the same message every time - IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL.
Help as to what the cause is and how to prevent this would be much appreciated.

Please follow this tutorial to run driver verifier.
Driver verifier stresses your drivers and will crash your pc if any driver fails due to a violation.
Driver verifier should be performed for a max of 48 hours, or when you have a bluescreen, whatever comes first.
If driver verifier has found a violation and you can't get back into windows normally, try to boot into safe mode and reset in safe mode driver verifier, or in the troubleshooting options open command prompt and type verifier /reset.

Your system will act very sluggishly while driver verifier is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.
Typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is caused by a bad memory reference. A driver is trying to access memory it should be accessing either because the memory has been cleared or it doesnt exist in the first place, or its in protected memory.
Typically this is the fauit of a faulty driver (most often video drivers) or the video card itself is faulty. There can be other culprits, but video is the most likely. Try updating your video drivers and using the Driver Verifier as suggested above.
