I've never seen or heard of a illegitimate device driver install.

Sleep can cause problems with some device drivers so it's possible what you saw wan normal. Would have been nice to know what it thought it was installing.

What does Device Manager look like? Any yellow marks?

Another problem: I can access Control Panel but cannot get into View Devices and Printers - it hangs up with the hour-glass symbol and won't allow to be closed or minimised.

I'm losing patience with all these problems now. I have backed up all my necessary files.

Would a re-installation of Windows 10 solve the problems:
    • be able to run MS Office files (Excel, Word etc.)
    • fix any driver issues
    • fix the ox800..... errors
    • return the system to normal working order

I have a Windows 10 ISO on USB (attached snip of file contents, total number of files & directories).

    Thanks for help, again.

Sorry, but I can't answer that question. A Clean Install will improve things but I don't know if it will solve all the problems.

Read here and you can see exactly what the ISo is of: How to See what Language, Edition, and Architecture of Windows 10 for a ISO file

Unfortunately no guarantee is given, but a clean install should solve those problems.

However we need to take into account that
    • the hardware of your system is fine
    • the installation media is not corrupted
    • the hardware with which you're planning to clean install is fine (e.g., USB, CD)

If all those requirements are alright (what mostly is the case), you may expect that the issues should be resolved.

    Hi. Thanks for reply.

Could you suggest how to ensure:

    • the hardware of my system is fine
    • the installation media is not corrupted
    • the hardware with which I'm planning to clean install is fine (e.g., USB, CD)

I think I should probably start from scratch, to re-install Windows 10. I have only partial functionality in:

    • Control Panel (can't see dates for installed programs etc).
    • Control Panel (Troubleshooting Hardware and Devices - Device Diagnostic error code 0x80070057, Source: engine, Context: Elevated. Also had 0x80070490 error, Context restricted)
    • Settings (Windows update errors - I can see last update: KB3213986, on 20th Feb, but Checking for updates gave error: 0x800705b4
    • Command line (I have been able to run chkdsk but some other cmd's won't work).

I have a 16 GB USB, which was formatted (FAT32) and has Windows 10 ISO burned on (see Screenshot earlier in this thread), but would happily re-format and start again.

In regards to the everything but the HDD, you'll experience stability issues that won't go away when changing OS and/or reinstalling the OS.
For the HDD, it could take a longer amount of time before any stability issue occurs.
Download the attached zip file, extract it and import the file in eventviewer (search eventvwr.msc after pressing windows logo + r)
The file will create a custom event view that provides events related to the HDD (like paging errors, bad blocks that have been found and chkdsk logs)

For the USB, a chkdsk with /r switch should be enough.
For the installation media, I would personally recommend to download a fresh ISO.

I cannot start eventvwr.msc since This app has been blocked for your protection..... mmc.exe.....
This message has appeared frequently.Chkdsk /r : type of file system is FAT 32
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use with another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.
