When I said 'uninstall Avast', I meant to switch to Windows Defender as it is thé AV that is garanteed stable.
When you upgrade, Windows is installed above another version of Windows, this may cause problems like BSOD's. The workaround is to do a clean install. When you perform a clean install, Windows 10 should recognize the key that is on your pc.
Okay, so today I thought I'd finally get around to doing a clean install. A quick Google search later it seemed to me that the easiest way to do this would be creating a boot DVD using this tool (at the bottom):

The way I've read it, if you used to run an authentic copy of Windows 7 Professional your hardware is registered to be eligible for Windows 10 Pro which it will automatically choose when upgrading. So if, after upgrading I want to do a clean install via DVD it needs to be a DVD for the Pro edition. But the drop down menu which lets you choose the edition for which you want to create a boot DVD doesn't offer Windows 10 Pro.
So what should I do now?
