BSOD with SSD gen 4 with older motherboard

This is my Full pc information: DESKTOP-0RHGTFB-(2024-03-30_06-37-22).zip
    • gigabyte ga-Z270-Gaming 3 " the bios was provided by Gigabyte technical support"
    • i7-7700K CPU
    • 16g of ram
    • GTX 1080 EVGA ftw
    • old SSD WDS500G2B0B
    • Windows 10 version 19045.4170

My issue began when I purchased a new kingston kc3000. After installing a fresh copy of Windows and testing a few games, my PC started crashing. I encountered bluescreen err specifically after playing games, which didn’t happen with my old SSD. I returned the SSD to the store, and they replaced it with another one, but unfortunately, the same problem persists. I even attempted changing the PCIe setting in bios from ‘auto’ to ‘gen3,’ tried another SSD EXCERIA PLUS G3 but it didn’t resolve the issue.

Looking in event viewer it give me
"Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation."
    and
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

here is the logo Upload files for free - Event viewer.evtx - ufile.io

Those are couple of HWInfo file before the pc crashes.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

    Hello,

Why did you change the M.2 SSD in the first place?

When a Gen 4 SSD is installed in a Gen 3 slot, it will automatically operate at the maximum speeds supported by the Gen 3 slot, which is a peak of around 3500 MB/s for read speeds.

Using a Gen 4 NVMe SSD in a Gen 3 slot can lead to unexpected issues, including Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Maybe a compatibility issue with the Motherboard or BIOS. Or a stability issue with the SSD.

Since you are not gaining any performance by using a Gen4 M.2 SSD, you'd be better off using your original M.2 Gen3 SSD.

If you're wanting in improve gaming performance, then upgrade your GPU, CPU and PSU. Just by upgrading the GPU alone will improve gaming performance greatly providing the PSU you have installed has adequate wattage to power the more powerful GPU.

    Hope this helps.

I wanted more space and ditch my old HDD.

I bought a PCIe 3.0 adapter to test the SSD rather than the main windows, and while playing games, it keeps crashing without a BSOD. and it give couple of worrying err.

You can still get larger storage sizes with Gen3. To find a compatible M.2 Gen3 SSD for your motherboard, go into your motherboard support - OVL for M.2 SSDs. Any of those will work, because they've all been tested. And being Gen3 is older, you should be able to save money. Even consider purchasing a used one on eBay for pennies on the dollar.

Unfortunately, the prices here are different than in the US, the price were identical or cheaper than Gen 3 SSD.

I will try and get Gen 3 SSD next time.

pcie is a backwards compatible standard so its not going to hurt anything outside of reduced speed.

exactly, but the issue right now appears to be that it keeps disconnecting, which causes the system to BSOD with no dump file collected.

I had a phase of bad RAM in a computer here. Bad RAM can do anything but it predominantly did lose/drop the disk (a RAID 0 of SATA HDDs) and rebooted. I didn't check events, dump files etc because I was quite sure about the cause (both the root cause, RAM, and its main consequence, lose/drop of the disk, for instance the Macrium Reflect Rescue Media produced such drops frequently w/o crashing or rebooting as it lives in a ramdisk and doesn't depend on the physical disk). I finally found trustable DDR3 memory and that fixed it all (although the system is old and has developed tendency to lose peripherals on manual reboots, specially the net adapter). I think you don't have "literally" the same problem (with either RAM or other part like the gfx card or your PCI express bus) but you could have "weak parts" that behave badly under stress. Maybe tuning down frequencies, generations etc in the BIOS or in the vcard.

That should correct the issue you're experiencing. Make sure whichever brand and size of Gen3 M.2 SSD you select appears on the Motherboard QVL list and you shouldn't have any more issues with stability or compatibility.

I see several large compacity storage drives here, you should be able to find at least one of them in your country.
