Critical Process Died when playing games

    Link to Log collector output

I’ve been having crashes since yesterday usually with stop code “critical_process_died”, occasionally others like Unexpected Store exception, Registry filter driver exception. These have been one offs though, 90% of the time is critical process. The crashes also seem to only happen when I play a game.

    Specs: 5800x3D, 32gb ram, 3080Ti, gigabyte x570 aorus elite, 1200W PSU, SSD1: WDS200T1X0E SSD2: TS4TMTE250S. Windows 11 x64 Ver 23H2 (build 22631.3235)

    Steps i've taken:

    • Updated BIOS
    • Updated Windows
    • sfc scan. This fixed some corrupt files.
    • chkdsk. Didn’t find anything. Crystaldiskmark and the manufacturers diagnostic tools (WD and Transcend) both seem fine
    • Memtest86+ passed
    • There were some gameinputsvc errors in error log, resolved this by uninstalling the version in add/remove programs (there seems to be a built in one that still lives)
    • Disabled all non windows startup services and program’s, this seems to have had the biggest effect so far on increasing the longevity. Before doing this was crashing within minutes (or seconds ) of launching a game. Now have been able to play for an hour or two before crashing.
    • Ran DDU and installed fresh nvidia drivers, perhaps helped a bit.
    • I've tried to get a memory dump but when the BSOD happens it does not progress from 0% and a dmp file isn't created

    Hi and welcome

Could you post a crystaldiskinfo screenshot as follows please, for both drives. Go to Download - Crystal Dew World [en] and click the blue zip button which will download a portable version of CrystalDiskInfo. Extract the zip file and run diskinfo64.exe which will ask for administrator rights, please allow it.
CrystalDiskInfo uses 3 colors for indication

    • Blue = good
    • Yellow = warning
    • Red = bad

A little below the menu you'll see drives with each a circle with a color, if any of these is NOT blue please click it.
Before making a screenshot, please do the following
    - Go to function > Advanced feature > raw values, change it to 10 [DEC]
    - Make sure all attributes are clearly visible
Make a screenshot of CrystalDiskInfo and post this screenshot in your next post.

Hey, I've attached the images, looks like my secondary drive has loads of errors even though everything is blue.

To note. I have fresh installed windows and was still seeing crashes. I then disabled XMP which made the crashes less frequent. But they still happen after say half an hour of playing a game. Currently have only one game “installed”, this is on the WD drive, my boot drive. (The one without errors). There are many other games from the previous installation on the Transcend drive (the one that shows errors) though I haven’t linked these in to stream yet on the new windows install.

It feels like there’s definitely a hardware fault but with the transcend drive not currently being used at all (though of course still connected). I wonder if it really could be causing the issue. Or perhaps I’m dealing with a mobo / ram / cpu issue.

One of your drives, which I believe to be your WDS, has been recorded a lot of bad block events on. Likely indicating there are many 'bad blocks' on it. With SSD tey are technically not a block like it's interpreted with a HDD, but I am suspecting this may be the root cause behind your problems.

Is there anything that might tip you off as to which drive it may be referring to?

fwiw when i ran chkdsk initially there were a bunch of errors picked up in files on the Transcend drive. So much so that I spotted a pattern (it was with a load of recorded game videos) That I stopped chkdsk, deleted them all and then ran it again to reduce how long it was taking fixing files that I don't care about.

Also, in the interest of troubleshooting I have been cycling my RAM sticks to see if i can pinpoint one that may potentially be broken.

if you have slots A,B,C,D and sticks 1,2,3,4. I have tried running with A(empty), B 2, C (empty), D 4. This allowed me to play for a while but eventually crashed. Currently testing A (e), B 1, C (e), D 3 and am going strong but haven't had time to test extensively yet.

That'd be the first drive according to the screenshot I posted.

Chkdsk can only do so much, once a drive is going bad it can go south fast.

My recommendation here would be to make a backup of anything important that you can't lose, replace the drive and cleanly reinstall Windows. I do not recommend cloning your setup as is to a new drive, you'll copy corrupted data too. That same logic would apply also if you make any sort of backup image/copy of Windows as is and restore it on a new drive, you'd put the corrupted data on the new drive.

    Thank you for your recommendation.

I took a few days testing with new RAM and was running quite smoothly but eventually the crashes returned.

I will try to RMA the drive, is there something you would suggest that I use to prove the bad block events being recorded on the drive as part of my RMA request.

It's in the event viewer, there's tons of those events, if I'm not mistaken it's under the system section.
