For the past couple of days my system's been crashing if I try to reencode videos, although how long it actually takes to crash tends to vary, and I'm not sure if it's the reencoding itself causing problems or if it's just the increased CPU activity. 2) Run Memtest86+ for 8 or more passes.

The more the passes the better the testing conditions.
It sometimes takes 20 or more passes to find malfunctioning RAM.
Just 1 error is a test fail and testing can be aborted.
Plan to run Memtest86+ overnight while sleeping and during the next day.
