    Crashing when Gaming

    Hey guys!

I've been having a horrible time with this issue now for over a year, with all sorts of different configurations (from windows 10, to windows 11). The reproduction steps are pretty simple:

    Here's my logfile: GAMING-(2022-11-25_10-46-22).zip - Google Drive

    1. Start any video game
    2. Wait for the BSOD.

The event viewer has been extremely unhelpful, as It just says logfile filed during creation.
I've checked the RAM using windows's ram checker and it all worked out fine. Here are some of the things i've done:

    1. Upgraded the PSU from a 750W to a 850W. This solved the problem for some time.
    2. Replaced the CORE SSD
    3. Put the PC behind a CyberPower 1500VA Surge protector (Tried two different once and without, was able to repro).
    4. Tried running with the case completely open and AC pointing at the case to eliminate any overheating issues (this did not help, everything remains pretty cool when crashing).

Let me know if you have any ideas!
    5. Upgraded the BIOS, Downgraded the BIOS, ran different Bios configurations.
    6. Turned on/off various settings in the BIOS.

    Hi mattvv,

Do you know what crashes you get?

Axe0 thank you for your reply!

I generally get stutter of graphics and sound then a bsod and reboot, the bsod is so fast I can’t seem to catch the code (sometimes I don’t even see the blue screen).

I turned of xmp on my ram (from 3600 back to 2133) and it appears to have made the games run longer (i was able to play a few campaign modes of age of empires 4 before crashing, whereas usually it would crash immediately).

I had troubles with Win 10 and Win 11 when I left the RAM on any "auto" settings.
Once I manually set the RAM to manufacturer's specs... all problems went away.

In my case I set the RAM to 3200Mhz, 1.35v and the timings like so...

These are the exact specs for my RAM from the manufacturer.
Yours ofc, will be slightly different. Use CPU-Z's... XMP-3600 column (bottom pics), to find your recommended settings.

    CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID

Sometimes... RAM is a bit too twitchy to be left on "auto" in the BIOS.

In an elevated (admin) powershell, enter this command which will disable the system auto restarting when a crash occurs.
    Code:
wmic RecoverOS set AutoReboot = False
After running the above command, see if you can force the crash a few times.

When the process reaches 100%, after a few seconds you can safely press the power button until your computer shuts down, then start the computer again.

    Hey guys!!

Thank you again for the useful tips.

For 1: I manually set the timings to exactly whats on the ram box and am able to reproduce.

For two, I can see the bsod clearly now after setting the powershell option, but it sits at 0% never going above, the code is CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

I tried turning svm off, as well as core performance boost, can still get the crash both ways and still stuck at 0% with that same critical process died error

    Update:

Digging into above it looks like the xmp profile is setting tRC to 85 instead of 58 for whatever reason, I am going to try and figure out how to change that timing manually now

    Next update:

The tRC didn't really help, I was still able to get the same crash.
It did get to 100% this time! And I see the bug crash inside of bluescreenview.

    Here's the log files:
    GAMING-(2022-11-26_20-50-30).zip - Google Drive

And here's the copy pasta from blueScreenView
    MEMORY.DMP 11/26/2022 5:43:30 PM CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED 0x000000ef ffffb005`9873b0c0 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 x64 C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP 12 15 22000 68,619,267,064 11/26/2022 5:54:03 PM

    yet more updates here:

I started doing the driver verification process as listed in another thread, I hit some BSOD's around window's virtual wifi drivers for sharing internet. I've turned those off and disabled those, and updated my onboard lan driver, so far running the verification again hasn't hit any snags (about 2hours in). I'll keep it running through the day, and if it's still looking good tonight I'll try and do another game test after turning verification off (unless there is a post here directing otherwise).

update: no more driver crashing at all.

I tried playing a game though and got the original crash still, so i'm scratching my head as to what happened.

The one above won't contain the new data Windows generated aside from a new dump.

BSOD analysis and debugging is not only dumps, but other logs generated by Windows must be analyzed as well since they can hold vital data too.

Thank you Axe. Here's the latest one I just generated

    GAMING-(2022-11-28_15-55-58).zip - Google Drive

I've taken out two sticks of ram, and also disconnected one of my extra hard drives inside since debugging before,
One thing to note above, I was messing with RAM timings and saw some crashes because of that, you may see two minidumps, onec I set ram timings back these went away (these happened just loading into windows - one was SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and another was DRIVER_IRQL..., however both seemed completely resolved with timings fixed again)

I haven't tested yet with the SATA hard drive removed, I'm going to test that now - but with the two memory sticks out I crashed almost immediately.

OK I was able to get the crash again (still wont get to 100% on the blue screen) even with that extra hard drive removed.

I was able to get a crash dump the other night will a full memory dump, uploading this now

Tried both sticks of ram in isolation and also got the same result
