How to Restore Files from Windows.old Folder in Windows 10

It takes time for all of the above but there is a clean end point: fresh operating system, drivers, and applications, with restored files

Troubleshooting may not fix the underlying problem(s).

Boot to Windows RE > troubleshoot > command prompt > type: dism /image:c:\ /get-drivers

    Hello zbook,

when I do the custom install, is there a easy way too export the relevant entries from the old registry to the new one?
I have all my programs installed on a drive different to the System-Drive, so most of the programs should be still running and I'd like to avoid reinstalling them.

    Regards,

I just scanned this topic in like 15 seconds... so I don't know if this has been mentioned or is appropriate.
I'll just post it here for easy access, if you guys decide to go this route.

An In-Place upgrade will repair Windows, and leave all your programs and files intact.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Wait to see what @zbook says about this.

A custom install is performed whether there is failure to boot and the end user wants Windows to save important files.
The important files are saved to Windows.old.
A fresh version of Windows is installed.
Drivers and Applications must be reinstalled.
Important files are restored from Windows.old.

The earlier troubleshooting steps were not able to fix the underlying problems with Windows.

Laplink is a software company that may be able to comment on what is and is not possible with their software.
    It is fee based.
If it can save the applications then only you can balance the cost versus the time and free custom install.

Hi, do you mean Laplink PCmover? Because the support just waved off my inquiry by stating "Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, we do not have a software that supports this scenario."

To rescue important files there are 6 main methods:
    1) manual backup using a windows 10 iso > notepad > copy and paste
    2) custom install > important files saved to windows.old > after a fresh windows version is installed > restore important files from Windows .old
    3) boot the problematic computer using an alternative operating system > copy and paste
    4) move the disk drive to an empty bay of another computer > copy and paste
    5) move the disk drive to a HD enclosure > attach to a working computer > copy and paste
    6) professional recovery > for example Seagate

    Hello zbook

I'm trying to make a custom install in order to get this problem solved, but it won't let me.
The local installation fails after a few seconds with following message:

"There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made."

When I try the cloud download instead it says:

"Unable to download. Please try Reset this PC using the local reinstall option"

Great! Microsoft Windows in a nutshell!

    Any advice?

    Here's the reset logfile:

I'm done with Windows 10; I'm buying a new SSD and install directly Windows 11 on it; then I retrieve the personal data from the old drive like I've already done last year. I don't have bigger hopes for Windows 11, but the update to 11 will come sooner or later, and after retrieval I'll use the old drive for saving backup images - you never know when the next update will f**k your system.
