Hi. After cleaning the heat spreader and the contact area for the water cooling assembly, and reapplying the thermal paste, there was a bit of improvement on the heat issue, but not a great deal. Primes95 caused the temperature to hit 100C less frequently (after 5 minutes of testing), but as you know it should be nowhere near that. Its constant running temperature (with a browser and some other simple apps running) appears to be around 30C-36C. Any suggestions as to how to bring the heat down to something a little more sane during the testing?

Btw, I looked up this thing about the integrated heat spreader, and it appears to be the flat piece of metal that covers the top of the CPU.

Thanks for your help so far.

Reapplying the thermal paste should bring the temperature a lot down, unfortunately I wouldn't know another way to bring down the temperature.
I'll ask the hardware expert if he knows a method to bring down the temperature.

In the meantime, have you experienced another BSOD?

If you have replaced the thermal paste properly, you might need a new cooler if the cause is the CPU.
But, first we need the results of the other tests to ensure what could be the cause.

The CPU was part 1 of the complete troubleshooting.

    Hi.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I intend to reapply the thermal paste again, but will have to do that and other diagnostics later after I run some errands, to address priorities other than my computer :)

After checking the connections to the CPU fan on the motherboard, it appears as though some connections were reversed.
The CPU fan was connected to a pinout called "CPU OPT", while the "radiator" fan (the part of the water cooler attached to the side of the box) was plugged into the "CPU FAN" pinout next to it. Reversing these only slightly changed the temperature properties. I am going to reapply the paste, since I believe it wasn't applied properly last time.

To answer your question, I have not yet had another BSOD, and the 100C issue seems to arise most when I use the "Small FFT" setting, which generates the most heat, reaching 100C in under 5 minutes. Under the default test ("Blend"), I never get to 100C, although I do get as high as 96C, but stay at about 75C if the load is said to be 99.9%. Right now, the load is 99.5% and the temperature is below 72C most of the time, which agrees with the CPU specs. This test has been running for 15 minutes.

After 17 minutes, 2 errors were observed in two different virtual cores and I stopped testing. The CPU was overheating at any rate at the time.

Meaning the CPU is likely damaged.

I hope a damaged cpu is not the case, but something isn't right.

I ran memtest86, which reported 19 errors in specific areas located on one of the DIMMs after 4h (CPUs running in parallel) (tests 6-9), but this appears to be not the case (0 errors after 2 passes)after running the same test on the same memory locations the errors were reported in (0x2039f007c to 0x3e8f0fe18) when the CPUs are running in sequence.

The docs to Prime95 tell me that another possibility is a power supply that is not up to the level of the other hardware. But if it is the CPU, then I don't want to just replace it thinking the problem is solved. I would still like to know what is causing the flaky CPU. The pinouts for the fan, even though they were reversed, were the same kind of connections. CPU FAN and CPU OPT both operate fans and have the same pin connections and voltages.

Please run MemTest86+ again for at least 8 complete passes, make a photo of the result and post the photo. This to make sure it is properly done.

Check the voltages of the componenten and the PSU.
