BSOD When Waking From Sleep State (Event 1001 - Bugcheck: 0x0000009f)

    Hello,

    I'm using Windows 10 Home - Version: 21H1 Build: 19043.1348

I've been experiencing issues for the past ~2-3 weeks when waking my PC from a sleep state. When attempting to wake, I'll press a key on my keyboard and nothing will happen (blank screen and no sounds). When I press the power button, the computer goes through a full boot (indicating abrupt/unexpected shutdown). If I disable sleep, I do not experience the problem.

In event viewer, I've identified errors such as "Windows failed to resume from hibernate with error status 0xC0000001" and "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffff8b8b0e940630, 0xfffff8035a26f750, 0xffff8b8b329c8a60). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: b40b8123-66b9-42e3-ab27-6eabcbd314ed.

These errors coincide with the times at which my PC enters and attempts to come out of a sleep state. I have the latest Windows updates and have just updated all drivers from my motherboard's website as well as from Nvidia (RTX 3070) and Intel (WIFI/Bluetooth). I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard. Despite these updates, I experienced the BSOD mentioned above last night such that when I returned to my PC, which was supposed to be in a sleep state, it simply powered itself back on through a full boot upon pressing a key on my keyboard.

I ran a Windows memory test, sfc /scannow, and chkdsk with no issues.

Something else that has occurred, which may be worthy of mentioning, is that an aesthetic LED on my motherboard tends to remain on after shutting down my PC at night. I have to turn the PC back on and off for it to disable itself. I do not recall this occurring prior to the issues I've been having with entering/waking from sleep.

Finally, I want to mention that I never actually see the BSOD's or experience them while actively using the PC. It only happens while I am away and the computer enters or exits sleep state -- possibly in between those times, too.

These are my logs from Log Collector V2 taken last night: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

The most recent BSOD should be 12/02/21 at 10:18:47 PM. It is the bugcheck I listed above. There was a MEMORY.DMP associated with it which I have uploaded here: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

Please let me know what you think and if more info is needed.

The V2 log opened fine for me.
The crash dump indicates it is the graphics driver (currently dated as 26 Nov 2021):
    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x9F_3_POWER_DOWN_DXG_POWER_IRP_TIMEOUT_nvlddmkm!unknown_function
The crashes have been occurring as far back as the logs go (which is beginning of November).

If reverting to older Graphics card drivers does not work then it may be necessary to wait for a newer driver or try testing the graphics card as @MrPepka has suggested.

I appreciate all the help thus far. This is my response to all suggestions mentioned.

    Easy Tune

Yesterday, before experiencing my most recent BSOD, I removed all Gigabyte motherboard software (including EasyTune), and reinstalled the latest software without EasyTune and some other unwanted software. I did keep System Information Viewer (SIV) to manage fan curves. This program uses the Easy Tune Engine Service, but Easy Tune itself is not installed. However, I can remove SIV and the associated easy tune engine service for testing if you would like.

    FurMark

I wasn't sure how long to run FurMark, so I did some quick research and settled on 30min. I used settings as indicated in the FurMark – GPU Stress Test guide. Temps did not exceed 76c (consistent with temps under heavy load -- such as gaming). Temps held consistently upon reaching 76c. No artifacts were noticed during the stress test, and the stress test ran smoothly. Here is a screenshot after ~30min: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

    Nvidia Graphics Driver

I strongly suspected the Nvidia graphics driver as the culprit. I actually rolled back to 496.13 (game ready driver released 10/12/21) from the current 497.09 about a week ago. This seemed to help initially, but I ended up experiencing the same problems with BSODs/sleep issues within a few days, so I updated back to the latest version. Should I roll back further than 10/12/21 release?

    RAM Overclock

Just to note, I have not noticed a problem before running with the only XMP profile of 3200mhz for my RAM. I am aware of the processor natively supporting less than 3200mhz, so I understand the concern. I did run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool without issues. My RAM (G.Skill: F4-3200C14D-16GFX) is listed both on my motherboard memory support list at 3200mhz and G.Skill’s QVL list for my motherboard. To be clear, I am only running the frequency/timings that are advertised by the RAM manufacturer using the XMP profile. I will try changing to the auto assigned 2400mhz speed by disabling XMP.

    XMP/Reset BIOS/Disable Hibernation

I will disable XMP, reset BIOS, and run ACP to disable hibernation

I will allow the computer to enter and exit sleep states to see if the above changes improve my situation.

At what point would I re-enable hibernation? I'm unsure if disabling would have any negative impact.

    Tuneup plus results were unremarkable.

If the computer continues to have BSOD:

    a) Reseat the GPU card and / or find an alternative port on the motherboard

    b) Check device manager, Nvidia control panel, and the BIOS for GPU settings:

    1) Turn off the Nvidia GPU and use only the Intel GPU > check computer stability / instability
and allow time to find another GPU card (AMD or Nvidia) for step 2)
    2) Swap test the Nvidia GPU card

    For swap testing:
    a) test a new card in the problematic computer
    b) test the GPU card from the problematic computer in another computer

Once the computer is stable for one week (no BSOD or unexpected shutdowns or restarts):

    a) Turn on hibernation which turns on both hibernation and Windows fast startup
    b) Turn off Windows fast startup

    c) Evaluate the computer with only hibernation in use for one week
If there are recurrent problems with hibernation then turn off hibernation.
If there are no recurrent problems with hibernation then continue using hibernation without Windows fast startup

    d) If the computer is stable without unexpected shutdowns and restarts then turn on XMP

Since yesterday, I have made some changes for testing. I did not notice any issues with sleep enabled and hibernation, fast start, and hybrid sleep disabled -- at least for a short testing period of about a day with several sleep/wake cycles.

I re-enabled hibernation, disabled fast start, thoroughly removed Nvidia GPU drivers with DDU in safe mode and cleanly re-installed latest drivers, kept XMP profile disabled such that ram is operating at 2400mhz, kept hybrid sleep enabled (default), and removed any form of Easy Tune software by removing System Information Viewer (SIV) and the associated Easy Tune Engine Service. I now use BIOS to manage fan curves instead of SIV. I have also set time before sleep at 5 minutes instead of 20min to test sleep/wake more often. I have not experienced any BSODs yet, but I will report back with my findings after several more days of testing with these settings.

It isn’t currently feasible for me to do a swap test with graphics cards, and I felt like there was a bit more I could do on my end before going into some longer-term testing to isolate the problem. I didn’t want to have to repeat that process because of software/drivers. That’s why I deviated just a bit from the most recent suggestion. If necessary, I will go down the road of enabling internal graphics/disabling discreet graphics, and I may also work with Nvidia and their warranty program should there be a hardware problem with the Nvidia graphics card.

It's been about a week since my last test, and I have not experienced any BSOD. The changes that likely resulted in this stability are the clean uninstall/re-install of latest Nvidia graphics drivers, disabling XMP such that memory frequency ran within rated spec of processor, disabling Windows Fast Start, or removal of System Information Viewer (SIV) app with associated Easy Tune Engine Service (previously used to manage fan curves).

Over the next week, I will do a final test of re-enabling XMP. Since I feel that Windows Fast Start is problematic, I will leave that disabled. If I have no issues, I believe I will have further isolated the problem and consider this issue to be resolved. Regardless, I'll report back with the results.
