    driver power state failure pci.sys

    Hello,

I'm running windows version 21H1 build 19043.1348. Every few months or longer, I experience a BSOD issue where I experience many BSODs in a row, before it seems to go away. I've tried to troubleshoot this in the past, but have given up because I've gone for long periods of time without it being an issue. When it does happen, I get a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE stop code, and the crashes are usually about 15-30 min apart.

I've looked at many other sites with information about how to fix this stop code issue, but none of them have given me any useful fixes. I also tried to follow some of the instructions under the crash debugging tutorial here, but !thread didn't show any drivers that were at fault and !analyze showed that pci.sys was to be blamed (I wasn't sure what to do after this result).

I used the V2 log collector to collect my crash information, which can be found in this zip file. I think I've got all the required information, but please let me know if there is anything else that might help with debugging this issue. Thanks!

I should also mention that occasionally, I see a "non-HP battery detected" error message upon startup following one of these crashes, even though I've never replaced my battery (so it should still be a factory HP battery).

I tried to update my NVIDIA graphics driver through the GeForce Experience app, but it said that the "installation can't continue" because "an error occurred."

Does the error message appear if the battery is not connected to the laptop? i.e. running from AC power without the battery connected.

I would suggest removing graphics card driver completely and then installing it again.

I managed to successfully reinstall my graphics card driver, and so far I haven't experienced any other crashes (fingers crossed). Although I'm still getting the battery message every time I restart my computer, so that might be a separate issue.

Also, when you say disconnect the battery, do you mean physically take the battery out of the computer (or at least disconnect it's cable from the rest of the computer)?

As long as the battery is not connected to the laptop then either way should be fine. However, please only disconnect the battery if it is easy and safe to do so. I suspect that the battery may possibly be faulty hence why you're receiving that message.

    You can use:

    Code:
    powercfg /batteryreport
To get a health report on your current battery.

Well I haven't gotten any other BSODs in a day or so, so I think I'll call the issue fixed for now and mark the thread as solved. If the issue pops up again in the future, I guess I'll try and reopen this thread or something.

The battery thing seems to be a separate issue, so if I'm not able to get it figured out, I'll probably create a separate thread for that.

I would suggest creating a separate thread in the Hardware forum. I'm glad the crashes appear to be fixed.

After 142 days or so, the BSOD issue as described in this thread seems to be back, so I reopened this thread. As described in the original post, I get clusters of these BSODs after long periods of time, so it's hard to know if the issue has been fixed or not. I've already gotten a few in a row today.
