CMD: chkdsk error & diskpart not working

    Windows 20H2 (19042.928)

    CHKDSK:
error: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\IfsUtil.dll, either not designed to run on Windows, or it contains an error. Status: 0xc000012f

Looked around to find a solution online but couldn't find anything helpful

    DISKPART & Disk Management:
Diskpart (Administrator & Not) opens the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\diskpart.exe" window, but won't load any further.

I read that a corrupt or dead disk could cause this, but there is nothing that indicates that any of my disks are bad.
I run an Intel 750 nvme disk as my main drive. This shows up as healthy in the Intel Control panel (96% health),
I also run 2 Samsung 850 Evo Sata SSDs, and one old 2TB WD Green drive. All of these have been working flawlessly.

I'm trying to format a removable harddrive currently. But the problem existed before this.

Hello and welcome to tenforums ,

Run SFC Command in Windows 10 and see if any Windows system file issues are found.

What happens if you run "chkdsk C:"

Until recently, I couldn't even complete the scan, but now I could. "Found corrupt files but couldn't fix some of them".
I will attach the CBS.log file

    CBS.zip

If you ran dism with /RestoreHealth option and still chkdsk not working...

I would suggest Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade where you will keep your apps and files.

First Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

To be honest, I've actually never done such a repair/reinstall. I'm used to having to reinstall everything, something I absolutely want to avoid. I have lots of files, and tons of licenced software for work that would take me days to reinstall, with tons of emails to get new licenses.

Will this kind of repair keep all my installed software? I.e, act like a pure repair for windows and nothing else?

A backup will be difficult, I don't have any drives large enough to backup my C: drive, and can't afford one right now..

Yes, you would keep all files and apps like I wrote - but backup is a precautionary step suggested.

Thanks. I tried to reinstall, but since I'm running 20H2, my installation ISO wasn't compatible, so I tried to upgrade to 21H1. It downloaded and restarted my computer, but when it came back up it still had 20H2.. I'm currently trying to do it once more..

Edit: You got to be kidding me... It installed the upgrade to my removable harddrive that also have a windows installation on it... This is why I wanted to format the thing..

Did you initiate the repair install while booted from the OS drive you wanted to repair install? Apparently not. You can only repair the Windows install you are booted in when you initiate the process.

I was mistaken. Since my OS didn't update, I assumed something had happened. When I looked through the drive I saw "Windows10Upgrade" and 21H1 inside. But when I tried to upgrade again I saw that the system tried to install the update only to fail and revert.
I am now trying to find a Win 20H2 ISO, to see if I can repair the OS, and then Update..
