    Random restarts while gaming

    Hey everyone,

I've been having issues with my computer lately while playing Ark survival evolved. First the game gets stuck, as in the sound bit keeps repeating, the screen either goes black or gets stuck on one fragmented frame, and eventually my PC just reboots itself.

So far it's happened a few times, but I only have a dump file of the last time. The dump file points to Rainmeter being the cause, but I doubt that, as I've had it installed since I got the pc and it's never caused any issues, and I clocked 20 hours on this game without it crashing. The crashes started this weekend, when I'm playing more than 3 hours continuously. While playing 1 - 2/.5 hours at a time during the last few weeks it didn't crash at all.

I've had this problem before with a few games (see this thread) and that was resolved by running driver verifier. The only thing that has changed since then is that I installed an extra case fan (already checked the connection), no new programs or anything.

I'm thinking that the CPU is overheating and causing the pc to restart itself, since most games it happens on have procedural terrain generation, and the CPU only has the stock fan installed, but I'm no tech, so its a shot in the dark.

I haven't done anything yet so far, but I did run Cinebench last week, and it didn't crash at 100% CPU usage.

Specs on my profile are up to date, and the zip from the posting instructions is attached.

    Help would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

    Hi, StefanS.
Which version of your display card driver is now?
The display card driver can lead to BSOD such as 466.XX.
Please you try to use display card driver version 465.89 and then see BSOD will occur again or not.

That's a bugcheck and the CPU normally would only be unstable with a manual core OC and usually with a high amount of Vcore. In that case, it means that the CPU returned an incorrect computation and Windows noticed, in many cases.

When overclocking the cores, the max core temp before instability lowers, compared to stock, most likely, so it's possible for a CPU to return incorrect calculations at more than 55 C in extreme cases or more likely more than 75 C.

    Hi Shiwan,

I'm currently running version 461.72, so it shouldn't apply, right? I can update to 471.11 (most recent June 22nd release) if that helps. I last updated the driver as part of the troubleshoot for the linked thread in April, and the system has run stable ever since.

    Hi RJARRRPCGP,

CPU's not overclocked though, the entire system runs at stock speed.
I haven't overclocked anything precisely because it makes the system more prone to crashing.

Could it be the system restarts itself because of the PSU? I checked the system on pcpartpicker, and 700W should be more than sufficient to run the system at full use.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

    Hi, StefanS.

I have a bad news for you.

Your current power supply is not enough power for ASUS NVIDIA Geforce TUF-RTX 3060.

ASUS recommend at least 750W power supply for using NVIDIA Geforce TUF-RTX 3060.

If you have some budgets, please you purchase a at least 750W power supply.

    Hi Shiwan,

Not that I'm doubting you, but what's your source on this?
PCpartpicker, a quick google and the bloke who built the PC for me tell me 550 - 600 W should be enough to run at peak performance, and the ASUS PSU table itself also says 550W.

I mean a new (80+ gold/plat, modular) 750W PSU is like 100 - 150 bucks. It'd be a shame if I got a new one and it turns out to be a driver problem.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

Hmm, that was so funny that ASUS display card page recommended at least 750W, but your ASUS PSU table said 550W was enough for i7.

I encountered there was no enough power supply that the computer would reboot itself during using in my experience, but I didn't confirm that your situation was the same or not.

I also had kernel power 41 critical errors in Windows 10 eventviewer by using NVIDIA display card driver 466.xx.

I had tested NVIDIA display card driver 465.89 and there was no new kernel power 41 critical error in eventviewer since last week.

You might try this version of NVIDIA display card driver and see reboot during using happen again or not.

    The last dump shows
    Code:
    WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)
A fatal hardware error has occurred. Parameter 1 identifies the type of error
source that reported the error. Parameter 2 holds the address of the
WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure that describes the error conditon.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 0000000000000000, Machine Check Exception
    Arg2: ffffdb05b59d5028, Address of the WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure.
    Arg3: 00000000b2000000, High order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
    Arg4: 0000000000030005, Low order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
Which is a CPU failure. Can be cause by many things, from a flaky power supply to video card/driver or other driver.

The dump is a Driver Verfier induced dump and does call out Rainmeter as the cause so there is definitely something wrong with that program, regardless of how long you've had it installed. I would uninstall it for now and see how the system behaves.

    Code:
    DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: VERIFIER_ENABLED_VISTA_MINIDUMP

    PROCESS_NAME: Rainmeter.exe
Once you've uninstalled Rainmeter run Driver Verifier again and see if any other problematic drivers show up.

It would also be a good idea to run the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool and see what that shows.
