    Linux

You hold interesting hours, good sir, do you sleep?

There's an idea - hadn't considered using linux as a way to check hardware stability in this case! I am intrigued.

I use Lubuntu on some old machines to extend their usable life. I'll look into LinuxLite, maybe that's got something to offer Lubuntu doesn't.

I'm not very good with linux CLI sudo apt-get install something something.... I always have to google commands and syntax, and never had the drive to compile a tarball or whatever, lol, my geek brain starts to overheat. Looks like Linux Lite has a gui, so I appreciate that.

I have my 1TB data drives disconnected at this point, so I'm just working with the C drive and the DVD drive. I am considering removing the Firewire PCI card and DVD drive to get down to the most barebones hardware configuration I can work with.

I'm reluctant to mess with the boot sector and partitioning on my system SSD. I've made mistakes with that sort of thing in the past gone down some unpleasant rabbit holes, but maybe it's time I get over that fear. I could put an alternate drive in, but I think I need to test the drive itself and the sata cable and bus to make it a worthwhile experiment.

I'll be afk for a few days, but this is apparently a long term, slow burning kind of project, so I'll get back to it when I return.

Thanks again for the help, and I hope you enjoy your weekend.

"maybe that's got something to offer Lubuntu doesn't"
Lubuntu is very, very good & perfect for testing, 20.04 is the latest version. Install the ISO on boot media of your choice & test.
If it doesn't start loading straight away, go into your bios & if the boot media is listed twice, chose the other one.

Once you are satisfied that all is Ok, install it on a spare drive & test.

Once you are satisfied that all is Ok, dual boot it on the same drive as Windows & test.

"I'm not very good with linux CLI sudo apt-get install something something"
I haven't had to do that for years. Also, I just hooked up an Ubuntu drive & updates were offered automatically.New win 10 build, BSOD on the reg-screen.jpg

    Enjoy your break.

    Happy bunny eggs day!

Disconnected all the other drives, hooked up an alternate drive to install latest version of Lubuntu from lununtu.me. Used rufus 3.8 to make a mountable ISO. 3.8 is probably not be most current Rufus to date, but it's already on the computer I used to make the install USB drive.

Lubuntu installed fine, but did not detect ethernet in the live session. After install, removed usb, still no ethernet running from the installed version. Tried clicking around the gui to set up a connection, and tried to run /ifconfig in terminal. Wondering if this lubuntu install didn't include net-tools? That seems weird though, I've installed lubuntu on a several old laptops and it generally had no issue with wifi or ethernet.

I don't mean to start asking for linux tutorials on TenForums, that's not really what this exercise is about

One of the two red X's that come up when I loaded snaildriver from Win10 was the Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family controller. It has a wifi looking icon next to it (screenshot on page 2 of this thread), but does that have anything to do with ethernet? I am using the ethernet port on the mobo.

I did not use snaildriver to update drivers previously as you'd suggested. I prefer to avoid apps like that to do driver stuff as I'd rather go straight to the source. What's your take on the lack of lubuntu network access? Noob user, or something more?

I don't have much to do to stress test the machine in lubuntu without network. The screensaver is jittery and glitchy. Does that means anything? I don't expect lubuntu to come with optimized GT710 drivers, but seems like the screensaver ought to work at a steady framerate.

Its been a while since I have worked with a Debian based distro, but you do not need the
    Code:
    get
    command when using
    Code:
    apt install
    Type it as:

    Code:
    sudo apt install net-tools

    "Sleep is healthy'
    8 1/2 - 9hrs is my norm.

"What's your take on the lack of lubuntu network access? Noob user, or something more?"
    Don't know.
Because I do a lot of voluntary work, I get given computers & have a collection of ide/sata drives. My modern comp has 8 Linux drives sitting in a draw next to me.
My older Pentium next to this desk, has about 10 Linux drives.
Never had a driver problem for internet connection on any of those installs, in fact quite the opposite, very impressed with driver installs, even for old hardware.

"I prefer to avoid apps like that to do driver stuff as I'd rather go straight to the source"
    Snail normally does that.

"I don't mean to start asking for linux tutorials"
Google will give you all the info you want.

If you are still getting problems, try another distro.

    Linux Mint

Haven't been getting too deep into this, but should have more time later in the week.

No luck sorting out the network issue on Lubuntu, so I got the latest Linux Mint distro and tried that.

I can boot it from USB, but it does not detect the HDD or network adapter. In the installer crashes when I try to select a different install location.

Really starting to feel hardware related.... but I don't know. I attached photos of the Mint installer crash in case it's helpful to anybody following this.

    Can't get that far.

    1) English
    2) Keyboard - English (US)
    3) Multimedia codecs [x]
    4) Installation type: see screenshot above

No drives are present. If I click 'change' or '+' the installer crashes.

My experience with various Lubuntu and Mint versions has been similar to yours. Usually goes onto whatever machine I throw it at without issue.

    SO..........

-BSOD in Win10. Snail flags network adapter and PCI bus drivers. AMD drivers won't install.
-Lubuntu installed and idles stable overnight, but doesn't recognize MOBO network adapter
-Linux Mint Cinnamon installer doesn't recognize sata drives and crashes installer when I try to mount one

    Considering paths from here:
    1) Snail's flags sound related. No network connection in Lubuntu, no SATA recognition in Mint. Perhaps it's time to reconnect the Win10 SSD and trust snail to do it's thing. Could PCI bus issue cause the network and sata failures?
    2) Nuke the windows install and pray for the best? I don't think the gods are with me on this one.
    3) Throw this thing in the neighbor's neglected mosquito pool. Florida man! YEAAaaaaAA!!
