    MBAMagain

I already uninstalled mbam, so don't really want to run it again unless there's specific reason to. It takes over real time protection and is kinda annoying imho. Does eset's verdict alongside windows defender provide enough confidence to move forward?

    regarding Windows defender.....

you'd mentioned it was failing earlier. I just went ahead and set up a full scan. It did it's thing and popped up a notification about 3 minutes later saying it completed and didn't find anything bad.

I looked in event viewer for a log, and there's a warning. Is this why you're suggesting MBAM, or is it more of a just to be sure kind of thing?

"It takes over real time protection"
Not if you change to Free as per my previous post. As Defender has problems, maybe there was conflict.

Extract from your logs. 3 separate fails. Try running again.

Can't say there's any change in stability. MBAM still crashes in safe mode. Random BSODs if I try and do anything on here. Even posting to the forum is sketchy.

LMK what logs you want, I am down for the cause, but the machine isn't really usable at this point, and I don't know that we've made any progress towards the repair other than (hopefully) ruling out malware. That said, completing a MBAM scan is a good benchmark to shoot for. If we can make the machine do that, I'll consider it a victory!

I still think it's a driver/hardware issue. This build has been cursed from day 1.

I truly do appreciate your help, and have to ask, what compels you to try and help schlubs like me work through this sort of thing?

At what point do I commit to more driver verifier delight?

"Can't say there's any change in stability"
What I have been doing is trying to get the basics right & still trying, any stability gains are a bonus.

Windows Defender still appears to have a problem, extract from your logs.

    "Windows Defender:

Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan has been stopped before completion.

    Scan Parameters: Full Scan"

"At what point do I commit to more driver verifier delight?"
Have a thorough read of this.

Well, ene.sys was the most suspect. I assume that came along with ASROCK Polychrome utility for RGB mobo stuff. I got rid of it last evening, but still getting BSODs.

For anybody who's trying to get rid of ene.sys for troubleshooting or conflicts with gaming services, I found this helpful:
[Trident Z Lighting Control] Driver Conflict / Clean Uninstall Guide - G.SKILL TECH FORUM

Against the advice of that H2G article, I enabled driver verifier this morning on all non MS drivers EXCEPT for the the MS chipset driver that's installed. The computer booted to desktop normally and seemed as good as it's ever been. I tried an MBAM rootkit scan again since that's the benchmark we've set, and the machine rebooted mid scan just like before.

Driver verifier is turned off again now.

I'll get to some googling, see if there's anything else suspect in the logs.

I'm not above nuking this install and starting from scratch if it comes to that.

Nice work, you are really getting into the swing of things.

Before & if you go down the Clean install path, test with Linux live, if it crashes, it narrows down the possibles. This is a very good version, if you don't have a Linux distro on hand.
