I'm a little uncomfortable with this Dr Web thing. It's unfamiliar, the softpedia download link is broken, the majorgeeks download link is broken. Cnet still worked, but when I downloaded it, it says it's out of date and directed me to their own website which says I either need to pay for it or agree to terms I don't want to agree to. So yea, not feeling this one.

Wondering if i'm having an issue with sata bus or sata cable? I've encountered crashes when trying to back up files between drives, and now I'm getting crashes trying to scan a drive.

Sfc scannow and chkdsk said all is well, but i'm noticing a pattern.

I'm willing to pursue the virus angle more to rule it out, is a Windows Defender deep scan sufficient?

"is a Windows Defender deep scan sufficient"
Doubt it, your logs show it has been failing. We are trying to get around the problem of why!

    Lets do this next.

Copy & Paste the text below ( starting CreateRestorePoint: ) save it into Notepad on your Desktop & name it fixlist.txt
NOTE: It is important that Notepad is used. The fix will not work if Word or some other program is used.
NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

    CreateRestorePoint:
    emptytemp:
    closeprocesses:
    cmd: netsh winsock reset
    cmd: ipconfig /flushdns
    HKU\S-1-5-21-1736916116-744675376-2537068296-1001\...\Run: [ASRock A-Tuning] => [X]

Open FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that, let the tool complete its run.
When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please Copy & Paste the contents into your reply.
    Refer these SS if needed.

Well thats no good! How long has windows defender been failing? There's no one drive or MS account, and it's unactivated, but as far as I knew windows defender was scanning and reporting no threats. Is that not the case?

I'm calling it quits for tonight; i'll start from here tomorrow. It looks like the script is to set a restore point addressing the audio interface drivers, hwinfo, and an ATI graphics driver?

Possibly relevant: I had some issues with the interface with a different firewire card that had a VIA chip. The current one has a TI chip and has been pretty stable since. But if you have reason to think it's the culprit, I'd like to know more about it, because that's a whole thing...

"But if you have reason to think it's the culprit"
Your logs show you have many things that could be contributing. Step by step.
I may be in bed when you get back, after running the fix, try one of these.

I have been using Dr.Web CureIt & ESET for many, many years.

The File Hippo link works for Dr.Web CureIt, without going through all the registration stuff. Or use ESET. No tool is 100% effective, the badies are always ahead of the goodies.

Run ESET Online Scanner, Copy and Paste the contents of the log in your reply please. This scan may take a very long while, so please be patient. Maybe start it before going to work or bed.
Make sure these options are checked/ticked in Advanced settings.
Remove found threats, Scan archives, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, Enable Anti-Stealth technology.

    15. The ESET Online Scanner saves a log file after it completes a scan. This log file can be reviewed or sent to ESET for further analysis. To save the log file, click Save scan log and select the save location. You can also click View scan details to see the information. To view the log after ESET Online Scanner has been closed, Show hidden files and folders must be enabled in File Explorer. New logs are appended to the existing log files when multiple scans are run. The path to the log file is the following: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\log.txt
    18. Can I select the destination of the scan?
Yes, the new version of ESET Online Scanner provides an option to select the destination of the scan (scan targets). This option can be found under Advanced settings.

Morning it is, your time & my time are displayed below our names.

The fix went well, now to see what the online scan reveals.

Meant to run my March copy of Dr.web, they now require registration, so use ESET.

Tried MBAM again after the fixlist, just to see if it'd work. It did not. For what it's worth, it green checked everything before 'checking file system', but rebooted somewhere during that part of the process.

    Trying ESET next.

Perfect, I was just about to start getting my head around the next steps, I have to memorize everything. This may take a while, in the meantime see if MBAM will finish in Safe mode.

Use the comp for the rest of your day, then run Farbar again & upload the 2 logs.
