    BSODs Windows 10 20H2 19042.867 - I'm at my wits end...

    Hi everyone,

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm running Windows 10 20H2 19042.867, and I've literally exhausted all options with these damn BSODs. (I'll definietly be uploading a BSOD log once it generates a new one).

In a nutshell, I built a PC about 8 months ago. It's an AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT, 64GB RAM 4x 16G RAM G.Skill Aegis at 3200Mhz, 1TB M2 970 EVO Plus, 4TB HDD, MSI MAG B550M, Zotac Gaming 1660 Super, TP-Link 1Gbps PCI Express card. Before this I actually used different RAM and a different motherboard. I experienced BSODs on the Gigabyte motherboard and managed to narrow this down to the RAM, this was refunded to me and new RAM purchased. Since then I replaced the MB to the MSI MAG B550M, upgrade the BIOS to the latest stable version, reset Windows twice now, updated all drivers, firmware etc.

I didn't build this PC for gaming hence the lackluster GPU, but I wanted to be sure there was no performance impact from the GPU on the CPU/RAM etc so a 1660 was a happy medium. I use the PC heavly for work, compiling software, virtual machines and at times I can have up to 6 to 8 VMs on the go. I've also got Plex Media Server running on this as well (I doubt this is the issue).

Nonetheless, Windows has been throwing constant BSODs, these can range from NON_PAGEFILE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGEFILE_AREA, HYPERVISOR_ERROR (this is probably just Hyper-V being stupid but only occured once, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (this is an interesting one, it's only happened once), SYSTEM_THREAT_EXCEPTION, there was also an error that was pointed directly to Razer Cortex which I've since uninstalld, sometimes the PC can be on for 9 days straight with no issues, but all of a sudden over night it'll go through multiple reboots with multiple different errors.
The BSODs are random, mostly they happen when the PC is not phsically in use, I could have multiple applications open and be physically using it and it will be fine, but then you leave it over night and it reboots. It does it even when there are no applications open after a fresh restart and no VMs powered on.

I've literally replaced every part except for the CPU, I've even replaced the SSD prior to this I was using a 512GB M2 Samsung drive from my old laptop on the Gigabyte motherboard. On the GB MB I experienced similar if not the same BSODs on roughly the same version of Windows.

Short of now replacing the CPU or even getting an independent assessment of all the parts, I'm not sure what to do. I have an unreliable PC that will sometimes stay on for two weeks or more without issues but then, throw a tanturm for a day or so. The CPU is the last part that hasn't been replaced, it's been reseated obviously in the new MB and new thermal paste applied generously but not excessively, I've made sure there is no leakage, temps are fine in that regard.

I will post a BSOD log once it inevitably does it again, in terms of performance the PC runs fine, I don't experience your typical memory issues that are evident of failing RAM. I've also attempted to run memory diagnostics, this is interesting because when ever I try to do this Windows won't boot to the memory management console, it did once, passed the test and that was that. I honestly think this is Windows 10, since I've basically replaced all the parts except for the CPU (what are the chances of the CPU being faulty?). My last two resorts now are to 1. reset and go back to v1909 or v2004, which is still currently LTS I think? and 2. metorphically throw this thing at a PC repair place and say 'fix and send me the bill'.

I'm tempted to try Linux, I've got 2x M2 ports on the MB, so trying Linux and running some tests and seeing if I get any errors might help? I'm not good a Linux but I guess Google will help.

Please, any advice would be fantastic. I love this PC I built, but it's giving me grey hairs now. I can't afford for it to be constantly crashing, if it is Windows and downgrading to stable version or even installing Hyper-V server is my only option I'll do it.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not your Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
    Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt) on the Desktop.
The logs are large, upload them using this. No time delays/Captcha-I'm not a Robot/account/registration needed. Give us the links please.

Do some multi hour runs of HCI memtest and karhu ramtester. (dont bother with memtest86).

Consider dropping ram to spec (yes even XMP ram is out of spec, its basically a factory tested overclock, overvolt).

    Reset bios to optimised defaults.

Try to prefer stock windows AHCI/NVME drivers to 3rd party ones.

Some ramdisk tools can cause BSOD.

Also if RAM, driver and bios reset doesnt help try temporarily disabling XFR on the cpu, if that stabilises things it suggests a potential power reliability issue.

    Update

I replaced the motherboard with the same model MSI MAG B550 WiFi. And, I thought it had resolved the issue. But it seems I'm now getting more BSODs at random times SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - services.exe fails, svchost.exe fails with the same error, ntfs.sys fails. I ran driver verifier and it actually threw the exact same drivers as being the issue i.e. ntoskrnl.exe, msrpc.sys, ntfs.sys all erroring out.

I've updated everything, I reset Windows once more and even ran v2004 for a period. Nothing helps. I've run memtest86 v9.0 for over 12 hours with no errors... but still it continues to crash with SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. I also ran prime95 and furmark at the same time to stress the CPU, RAM and GPU all at once - this actually caused a BSOD not that I remember what it was.

I'm now 99.99% confident that it's the CPU cache that's failed, becaues Windows will work fine for a period of time. Strangly enough my VMs in Hyper-V BSOD with similar errors as above as well (what are the changes aye?). I've purchased another CPU, exactly the same brand new and already raised an RMA for the current one.

Is there anything else I should try????

    Thanks

Did you ever test with a live CD?
Test with a live CD, if it crashes, it narrows down the possibles. This is a very good version, if you don't have a Linux distro on hand.

I have a 2-GB bootable SD card containing the following version of Linux:

Linux Mint 19 "Tara" - Cinnamon (64-bit) - Linux Mint

This is a very good version.

Seems you didnt test ram as suggested? and no prime95 isnt the best tool for that. Neither is memtest86. Karhu ramtester and HCI are what you want to run.

    Update 2

    You won't believe this...

Yesterday when I ran driver verifier it was BSOD'ing on the following msrpc.sys, ndivert.sys, ntoskrnl.exe. I knew msrpc.sys was a Microsoft driver and ntoskrnl.exe is part of Windows kernel. Though ndivert.sys? If doing some searching I found this was a driver for NordVPN.

I uninstalled NordVPN and re-ran driver verifier with 3rd party drivers selected only, to my surprise no BSODs and no errors. I deleted driver verifier settings, re-ran it again with all drivers selected and again no BSODs and no errors. Before running the second verifier test I also OC the RAM back to 3200Mhz.

I'm not surprised it's something as dumb as NordVPN causing this, it was running in the background (the services) but not the actual application. I never use it on my PC but rather on my laptop, and yes this would have been something that I installed every time I reset my PC.

Time will tell if this is actually resolved, I feel so dumb for not looking at this earlier. Going to the extent of replacing my mobo and CPU... then new CPU hasn't arrived yet so it's always a possibility that it may be faulty, but I really hope this issue was as simple as this.

Also I tested the RAM using hci memtest - no issues found.
memtest86 ran for over 18 hours - no issues found.
Windows memory diagnostics - no issues found.

I'll leave the thread open for now, hopefully (fingers crossed) this actually resolved the issue.

Any update since then? I would prefer to keep NordVPN installed if there's a solution
