Coming back and waking up the laptop to read your last message I first had a DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION bugcheck happening. Zip file attached.

Though, the sleep/wakeup crash scenario was a bit different than usual so I'm thinking that maybe this driver violation is not the 9F bugcheck we're actually hunting for. The normal crash scenario is that when I close the lid, the preparation for sleep takes forever and eventually fails and just powers off the computer. Then when I power on I get a regular fresh boot (BIOS POST screen etc) with a 9F bugcheck in the event log.

The scenario this time seemed to successfully go into sleep, and to also successfully wake up. Wake up takes a bit longer now that driver verification is enabled so I left the computer for a while and the screen saver kicked in. When I came back I pressed a key to wake up the screen and for a fraction of a second I could see my awaken desktop with all programs etc and then the DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION bugcheck happened.

BTW I can see some event log warnings for BTHUSB (Bluetooth) that seem to be new since enabling driver verification.

I might wait with updating the Alps driver and for now only update drivers that get a mention by driver verification? So I keep as much of the system constant as possible while we look for the 9F bug. Does that sound ok?

It turns out that there are some errors in the Intel Wi-Fi card driver. Unfortunately, but your Wi-Fi card has EOL status so it can't be solved. Are you able to connect your laptop to the router with a cable and not use Wi-Fi? Alternatively, if you have a virtual machine, can you migrate it to VirtualBox or VMWare?

    If I had to buy a new Wi-Fi card, I would buy one - Intel 8265.NGWMG Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 - Newegg.com

Were the errors you saw with the wifi driver of the kind that causes 9F errors, or is this a new problem revealed by the driver verification?

I move around a lot so will be too hard to stay on Ethernet cable unfortunately.
You say that an alternative is to migrate to VirtualBox or VmWare. Do I understand correctly that the problems are connected to running the wifi card with Hyper-V? I might just skip virtualization altogether on this machine if it hurts stability, it's not that important, and it is a quick and easy step to try out to see if things start working better

Thanks for the link to the disassembly video. I'll order one of those 8265 modules (I see on Intel Ark that 3160 is an older product) but there will be some delay before it's in place of course.

I looked for a WiFi card that is known to be compatible with your laptop. Not all are so you need to be careful.

I found I can actually get the even newer Intel 9260 for a cheaper price than the others mentioned. As I understand it has the same antenna connectors and all these M2 products just connect to the PCI bus so should be ok? Or am I missing something?

Looking further at Intel Ark I can see that different M.2 wifi cards have different "System interface type". Some of them have "Wi-Fi(PCIe), BT(USB)" and some have "M.2: CNVio2". The latter is a new Intel standard that requires specific Intel chipset support and so should be avoided in my case.

The M.2 PCI cards seem to be using a standard that has been stable for a long time so I made a comparison of the products from each generation (including my current 7260) that have PCI interface and seem to have matching specs otherwise (wifi+bt, 2x2 antenna, no lte):
    Intel(R) Product Specification Comparison

From my own (maybe limited) understanding I might as well go for the newest Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (AX200.NGWG.NV, 2230 No vPro) that I can get for $15.

Sounds right. As long as you can return it if it doesn't work (Amazon, NewEgg, etc. )I'd say go for it.

I have ordered the AX200 wifi+bt card and it will arrive in the middle of next week. I have paused driver verification while waiting; it does slow down things a fair bit .

MrPepka: could you say a little bit more about the virtual machine changes you suggested and I might try them out in the meantime? Should I just uninstall the Hyper-V feature in Windows settings?

That would be the best. Transfer virtual machines from Hyper-V to e.g. Virtualbox and uninstall Hyper-V itself
