    Soft BSOD only at restart

    I use Windows 10 Pro, version 1909 Build 18363.657.
Attached V2 log collector zip file.

Let me start out by saying that my main question is not how to fix my BSOD issue.

My main question is, is it possible that there is a certain part of the RAM or CPU (cache, ALU, CU, etc) that would only be utilized at runtime, at a computer boot, and not utilized again after boot? (For this reason, I am not including my entire system specs unless someone wants them)

I'll now explain my issue and you'll understand why I ask.

My computer is on 24\7. I usually reboot once a week just to clear up stuff.

During the week, I have no issues. The computer works like a horse. It handles multitasking like a pro. I am a professional graphic designer, video editor and software engineer programmer. The computer works with photoshop flawlessly while rendering 4K video. No freezes, no stuttering, no problems at all.

It's only when I restart the computer, will I get the BSOD at boot. The culprit will always be some generic file such as ntoskrnl.exe with a generic reason such as "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGES_AREA" or some other file\code that is non-specific and does not give much info to work with to figure out what caused the crash.

Usually, after the BSOD, the computer will restart a second time by itself just fine.
Sometimes, the second reboot will also cause a BSOD and it will try to do the auto repair thing.
The auto repair will not succeed and it will give me the "advanced mode" button.
All I have to do is click on the advanced options but not choose any of them. I just choose "Continue to Windows" and it will then boot into Windows just fine and work great for another week... until I restart again.

My main dilemma was if it's a hardware issue, how does the computer work fine all week and the BSOD only happens at reboot. That's why it would make much sense if there was some part of the ram\cpu that is only utilized at boot. And even if there was, I can't understand why the computer boots fine on its own after going through 1-2 cycles of the BSOD. Also, if the solution is to simply skip something at boot (which is why "continue to windows" boots fine) then why can't Windows figure this out during the auto-repair attempt?

    SOME FACTS:

    1. Being a programmer, I am very computer savvy, so before you attempt to offer a solution to the BSOD, just know that if your solution is mentioned anywhere on the first 30 pages of a Google search, It's most likely that I've tried that already.
    2. I have tested and benchmarked my ram, cpu, gpu and other hardware components. drivers are fine, no malware, no bloatware. No electric current issues. No software issues or clashing dll's (I write registry entries and dll files for a living.)
    3. I started my first computer course when I was 12 (in 1985) and have had computers for the past 35 years and not once have I come across an issue that I couldn't solve... this is the first time that I am stumped.

    IN CONCLUSION:

I would like to know if it's possible that a BSOD that occurs only at boot, can indicate that the culprit is something that is only triggered at boot, and if so, what can that be?

    Thank you!

Sorry, there might have been a few such tools from years ago. Fixed and reuploaded.

    Hi zvit,

Welcome to the TF BSOD forum.

Thank you for complying with the forum rules and fixing the piracy /crack.

The computer has had multiple BSOD in the past three months.
There was only one mini dump file collected.
There was one misbehaving driver in this BSOD.

The BIOS in use is beta.
Is there any specific need for this BIOS?

    The logs displayed drive problems.

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) sfc /scannow
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    8) wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 7
    9) wmic recoveros get autoreboot
    10) wmic recoveros get DebugInfoType
    11) bcdedit /enum {badmemory}

    12) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    13) Make sure that there is no over clocking while troubleshooting

    14) Sometimes there are problems in the bios that produce BSOD

The BIOS: Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. F10b, 21-Nov-12

Is there a specific need for the beta BIOS?
If not, please use the most up to date non-beta BIOS.

    15) To ensure that there are no improper bios settings please reset the bios

    16) Sometimes there can be failure to boot after resetting the bios

    17) Backup the computer files to another drive or to the cloud

    18) Make a backup image using Macrium:

Very good direction of thinking but this one doesn't apply for me. The fast startup only applies to shut down and not to a restart, which I always do. Also, it only applies if you have Hibernate turned on in power options and mine is turned off.

Hi zvit - There was one misbehaving driver in this BSOD
Can you please tell me which misbehaving driver you noticed? There were lots of drivers loaded in stack so which did you see?

Thank you for the detailed suggestions. Do you have any input on my main question, if it's possible that there is something that would cause a BSOD only at startup? Isn't it logical that if there was a faulty driver or faulty ram that I would experience BSODs during PC operation and not just at startup? (p.s. If I boot to safe mode, it NEVER goes into BSOD. This again made me think that there is something specific that is being accessed only at boot time and only when booting into normal mode)

The reason I deleted some minidumps is that I started fresh after months of not solving them. If you need previous minidumps, I can retrieve them for you from my weekly Macrium images. I always have the last 5 images saved on an external drive.

I don't remember why I installed the beta BIOS version. I did this years ago. The beta (F10) and the stable (F9) are both from 2012. I have never downgraded a BIOS version so this will be my last resort although I agree with the logic of adding this to the list of things to try.

Some of the suggestions were tried already but I will try the ones I haven't yet.
I will then update this post.

    There is insufficient information.
Hardware problems can cause crashes that are or are not BSOD.
These are unexpected shutdowns and restarts.

The logs displayed that one of the drives has one or more bad blocks.
When available please post test results.

The commands will check the operating system, component store, and drive file system.

It is easy to miss BSOD when automatically restart is checked.

When automatically restart is unchecked you should see a BSOD window with bugcheck and : (
Sometimes you may see a driver in the form *.sys

In a recent thread an OP posted commented that they had no BSOD.
Images and logs confirmed that automatically restart was checked.

For you computer secure boot was disabled.
As you commented it is automatically disabled when hibernation is turned off.

As I said, I do not have any unexpected shutdowns and restarts.

I will do the relevant tests and get back to you.

p.s. Do you see which driver misbehaved? There were lots of drivers in stack at time of the BSOD.

    Thanks! Will update later.

See post #4, step #24, for the misbehaving seen in the mini dump.

    These can be performed overnight:
    a) HD Tune full error scan
    b) Sea Tools for Windows long generic test
