Whether it tests only the installed drives or external drives I don't recall.
It has higher levels to fail as HP uses it for decision making (RMA).

For the drive with the bad block in August it did not appear for the rest of the year.
So I'm guessing it was a temporary drive?

Run Macrorit on all drives: (post images into the thread)
Download Macrorit Disk Scanner Portable 4.3.5

Yep, done that. Out of warranty currently so not 100% sure what they could even do for me.

They may provide more information about the failure so that you can find possible troubleshooting options at a local computer store.

In you professional opinion do you think that is the issue? Could an issue at that level cause those DMA VIOLATIONS?

That's all clear. BSODs result from a damaged USB port, or rather a USB controller which is trying to get DMA in the wrong way. Without contacting the producer, I will not be here, but I see that you have already started working on this topic

Just got laptop back from HP after paying £200 for them to fix it. They've replaced the system board and told me it passed all tests. Immediately ran my own component test...failed.

Just tried the original syncback transfer which is where I noticed the original BSODs, now I get a BSOD with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR...

    Absolutely ridiculous.
