Dell XPS 9560 - Daily BSODs

Hey all - just to start by saying thank you for giving your time to help people out with issues like this.

Background - I've had my Dell XPS 9560 laptop for about 2 years now. For the majority of that time, it's been rock solid, apart from having to swap out the original Killer network card for an Intel one because it kept dropping connection (common issue with these laptops).

I've got a big old monitor that only has DVI-I input, so I use an active USB-C --> Display Port --> DVI-I adapter chain. About a month ago, it stopped working (not the first time). Last time this happened, tried everything I could think of, eventually reinstalled Windows on a new partition, and suddenly it started working on the old install again.

This time, even that didn't work. I used the Dell Support Assist tool to update all my drivers, and upgrade the BIOS, and that was when the problems started. Daily (or sometimes 2/3 times a day) BSODs, all with different error codes, no commonality.

I did a clean install of Windows (Home) about a week ago, and only used Windows Update to fetch drivers. System was ok for a few days, then the BSODs started again. I needed Hyper-V to run a virtual machine, so I upgraded the system to Windows Professional.

    Things I've tried:
    - tried updating everything again via Dell Support Assist - still BSODs
    - used Snappy Driver Installer to find all missing drivers (it found about 50 Windows and Dell SA didn't find) - system now runs much faster, and the monitor is working again, didn't get BSODs for 2 days, but now they're back
    - I got one BSOD when launching a VM, so thinking it might be related, I disabled Hyper-V, and also disabled the Intel virtualisation stuff in the BIOS - just got another BSOD this morning however. All BIOS settings related to voltages/overclocking stuff are at their defaults
    - ran all the Dell SA stress tests - no hardware errors
    - ran the Windows memory checking tool - no errors
    - disabled "Fast Startup" in the power settings, still BSODs

Looking at the times of the BSODs I've had since reinstalling Windows, all apart from one have come from ntoskrnl.exe and happened within a 15 minute window of 9am. I put my laptop to sleep overnight, usually wake it back up about 7:30am, and then it crashes about 9am. Stable for the rest of the day, apart from one I had late at night, which was reported to be caused by a DirectX driver.

I'm probably using Visual Studio at around the time the crashes occur, if there's any commonality.

Windows version is 1930 Build 18362.476

Attached is the output of the V2 dump gathering tool.

Many thanks for any assistance with this one.

Test your RAM with HCI memtest (Test RAM with HCIDesign Memtest | Sysnative Forums)
Test drivers with Driver Verifier (Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10)
Check in Windows Update if there are any more updates to your system

I ran 4 instances of MemTest as directed (one for each core) and waited for 400% coverage on each. All 4 instances found multiple errors which came in batches on a few separate occasions, directing me to this page: MemTest for Windows: Error detected

This is interesting, because when I ran mdsched.exe about a week ago, no errors were found.

I ran the Driver Verifier with the default options, and it told me there were no unsigned drivers found.

Windows Update installed a single Windows Defender update, finding nothing else.

Referring to the thread linked, I have updated a couple of power settings to "maximum performance" on "plugged in" (my laptop is never not plugged in).

I cannot find Intel Rapid Storage Tech control panel to disable Link Power Management - is there something I need to install?

    1. Run Driver Verifier Manager
    2. Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)"
    3. Select all standard settings and 2 additional settings (Force pending I/O request and IRP Logging)
    4. Select "Select driver names from a list"
    5. Select all drivers except Microsoft drivers
    6. Accept changes and reboot computer

Ok, I've done this - it's caused my external monitor to stop working. Is this expected, and can it be reverted? (for information, it's gone back to detecting it as a "USB 2.0 Billboard", which was the original issue that started me on this saga).

I need this working tomorrow really so I can do my job.

    Thanks

Edit: I've just read up on the verifier tool, and that I can turn it off if I need to. I will try using another external HDMI monitor to work off tomorrow. Hopefully when I turn the verifier back off, my main monitor will start working again, it's a temperamental thing.

Ok, we have another BSOD. Used the computer pretty much constantly all day, just got one now whilst running some intensive code calculations. V2 log is attached.

Is there any other kind of log from Driver Verifier I should attach?

My big DVI-I monitor has not started working again after disabling Verifier and rebooting unfortunately.

    Many thanks

The latest BSOD was without windows driver verifier.
There was one misbehaving hardware driver.
The logs displayed possible drive problems.

    Please perform the following steps:

    1) On the windows drive please free up space so that there is approximately 30 GB free space.
Files can be moved to another drive or the cloud.
Windows will automatically delete memory dumps when the free space is < 25 GB.
The memory dump file size can vary.

    Code:
    ------------------------
    Disk & DVD/CD-ROM Drives
    ------------------------
          Drive: C:
     Free Space: 8.7 GB
    Total Space: 80.0 GB
    File System: NTFS
          Model: NVMe KXG50ZNV512G NVM

          Drive: D:
     Free Space: 185.0 GB
    Total Space: 407.7 GB
    File System: NTFS
          Model: NVMe KXG50ZNV512G NVM

    2) Please check the Dell documents to see which RAM modules are on the Qualified Vendor List (QVL).
    SK Hynix HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH
Comment into the thread whether the RAM modules came from Dell or another source and whether they are or are not on the QVL.

    3) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    4) sfc /scannow
    5) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    6) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    7) sfc /scannow
    8) chkdsk /scan
    9) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    10) wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 7
    11) bcdedit /enum {badmemory}

    12) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    13) Run Memtest86 version 8.2 (or newer version if available) for four passes.
Repeat the test so that eight passes are performed.
MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 Memory Testing Tool
Use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.
In case there are any problems uploading images use share links (one drive, drop box, or google drive)
Memtest86 has a feature to produce a text report.
Please post this in addition to the images.

    14) Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    15) Run Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
Post an image of the test result into the thread
    SeaTools for Windows |
    Seagate

How to use SeaTools for Windows | Seagate Support US

    16) Run HD Sentinel: (free or trial edition)
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Post images of each of these tabs into the thread:
    Overview tab
    Temperature
    SMART
    Disk performance

    17) Uninstall and reinstall: Igdkmd64.sys or IGFX
    Intel GPU drivers

I haven't had a chance to run through the steps yet, as I have to use my laptop all day to do my job. I'll most likely be able to get through it all at the weekend.

I have just had another BSOD however, log file is attached.
