    @wpcoe Don't give up yet!

    As Disk 2 is not Active, you can't boot from it! - its my fault - I should have said that the single NTFS partition should be made active.

    Just select the disk and right click. Then select Mark partition as active.Attachment 251751.

    Then open up an elevated prompt and issue the command BCDBOOT d:\windows /s d:, and then recheck disk management and EXPLORER.EXE D:
    You should see a difference.

    Please recheck your Acer BIOS Setup Utility, that the HDD is the primary boot drive.

    It is insecure to try to run an unsupported (2015) Windows 10 version, just like running Vista or XP, and soon Windows 7, because there will be lack of support, not only from Microsoft, but many 3rd party programs such as browsers.

    It's a zipped folder containing setup files of ages ago dated to 2002 and older - it may need to be run in compatibility mode for Windows XP!

    See my edited post just above your last one: I was able to install the July 2015 version of Win10 Pro x86 on to the Acer laptop, with the intent to ASAP upgrade to v.1903 (which was where this odyssey started.)

    I feel that you may find yourself chasing your tail - it may fail the upgrade like before - but you may be lucky!

    The main problem is with the Chipset - the Mobile Intel 915GM Express has not been upgraded by Acer, and I have found that Intel does not support these OEM modified drivers either - at least not for my Travelmate 2423 and these non-WDDM drivers are not supported by the later Windows 10 versions, at least, by the later versions of Windows Setup - hence your BSOD re USB and my failure to avoid system interrupt conflicts when trying to install/upgrade to more recent Windows 10 versions.

    As they say - your mileage may vary! :)

    Yeah, but hope springs eternal.

    This time I'm trying it a different way. I went to the microsoft.com software-download web page and clicked on "Update now," rather than trying from a USB thumb drive. It's downloading now. <fingers crossed>

    I used the ZH1_3B14.WPH downloaded from that link along with a current WIN10-compatible version of WinPlash and got:

    Attachment 251758

    WinPhlash itself worked -- it successfully backed up the current BIOS file, but couldn't flash the newer one

    Tried to update to v.1903 Win10 Pro x86 by using the microsoft.com web page and it bombed with the same error message that started this thread: "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL."

    Then, I tried updating to v.1809 by downloading the .ISO file to the laptop HDD and clicking install.exe in Windows Explorer -- got a different error that I'm currently troubleshooting.

    I'm going back in time to earlier Win10 ISOs until I find the most recent one that will work.
