    Please perform these hardware tests.
    (Many can be performed overnight)
Post images of all tests into the thread:

    5) For DDR3 RAM please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

The testing is done not by time but by passes.
The more passes the better the testing conditions.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.

    b) When Memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

    Post a share link for:

    Code:
    Crash dump found at C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP
    Creation date: 10/18/2019 10:15:10
    Size on disk: 735 MB

    There were 5 new BSOD.

    There were no misbehaving drivers.

The BSOD are consistent with malfunctioning hardware.

Windows had already found bad RAM.

    Code:
    RAM Defects
    -----------
    identifier {badmemory}
    badmemorylist 0x8b86
    0x1d6830
    0x2127ec
    0x273c5e

Replace the RAM modules with a new pair on the Qualified Vendor List (QVL).

    zbook,

as much fun(?) as it would be to do all those tests, I don't have the time. This computer has to go out of town tomorrow. I have a separate trip to get ready for. What I know is that at the beginning of the month everything worked, windows did an update, and now it doesn't. How would you suggest to use an iso? Can I mount it from this hard drive?

If I had mission critical work I would have a raid....as windows is clearly unable to do much here. So AFAIK it will just be a semi usable machine that occasionally blue screens.

I've been to the Lenovo site, Lenovo Service Bridge does not work. I cannot read the serial number on the back of a 5 year old computer. My sense is that since it depends on wmic being functional, it will fail. The computer will not report back what the hard drives, memory, etc are.

The only update I haven't tried is a bios update, mostly because users have reported that doing so bricked their machines.

Of the last set of action items:
    (1) and (2) do not work.
I cannot post memory.dmp, I don't have permission although it looks like I do and am in an administrative account.
I might try the memory, as we need some anyway.

It will be a bit before that happens.

Insert the windows 10 iso into any USB port.

For an in place upgrade repair:

Open file explorer > this PC > C: > launch setup or setup.exe

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

For custom install you can boot to the iso #3 or perform #4

For the memory.dmp see if you can copy and paste to another folder, for example, the downloads folder.
Then zip > post a share link into the thread.

It's best to replace malfunctioning hardware first to reduce the likelihood of BSOD during in place upgrade or custom install.

Each evening before sleep run one of the hardware tests.

    Code:
    Mode LastWriteTime Size (MB) FullName

I could see memory causing bsod

But how would that cause the system information app to fail? "Windows Management files are missing or moved"

I don't see the cause and effect there.

The hardware needs to be checked first.

Then Windows problems can be troubleshooted.

A BSOD during a Windows upgrade is an unexpected shutdown and can corrupt Windows.

Not that it is here or there, but it just seems odd that a consistent bit of the software isn't there. The installation has failed twice now in the same way, SAFE_OS with an error during MIGRATE_DATA.
Also more than annoying that after all these years there is no way to replace *just* corrupt files.

Chkdsk has been run on the hard drive.

At some point (way past here) buying new ram memory is cheaper than spending time testing memory.

I will check to see if any of those programs will actually run. I am also not a fan of downloading lots of random software.
