If a computer can boot using the windows 10 iso then the advanced troubleshooting menu can be opened.
    For example:
    startup repair
    system restore
    command prompt
In command prompt various commands can be ran for troubleshooting.
    etc.
A reset save files equivalent (reinstall drivers and applications) may be an option.
If files are backed up then a clean install is also an option.

It would be best to have the three tools so you could backup any important files, check the drive, and troubleshoot

Here is a manual (non-Rufus) procedure originally posted by @NavyLCDR that I recorded and saved (with slight modifications). I've used it many times now and it works under all boot conditions, UEFI/GPT/MBR or CSM/MBR.

    1. Use the Media Creation Tool to download and save the Windows 10 ISO file you need to your hard drive.
    2. Insert the USB flash drive.
    3. Open a Administrator Command Prompt. It will say Administrator Command Prompt in the Title bar. Enter the following commands:
    4. diskpart
    5. list disk
    6. select disk # <- replace # with the actual disk number of the USB flash drive
    7. clean <- this will erase the disk selected above, make sure you selected the USB flash drive!
7a. If the flash drive shows as GPT then you need to convert it to MBR: convert mbr
    8. create part pri
    8a. sel part 1
    9. format fs=fat32 quick
    9a. assign
    10. active
    11. exit
    12. exit - and if the first Command Prompt was not an Administrator Command Prompt, exit that one too.
    13. Mount the ISO you downloaded. If you are using Windows 8 or 10, you only have to right click on it and click on mount. If you are using Windows 7, then you must use a program like WinCDEmu to mount the ISO file:
WinCDEmu - the easiest way to mount an ISO. And more...
    14. Copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the USB flash drive.

That's as simple as it gets. Between steps 7 and 8 you can enter: "select part 1" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.
Between steps 8 and 9 you can enter: "assign" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.

Here is more info from NavyLCDR on why this is the best way to do this:

For reasons I've explained, I can not use the media creation tool, I downloaded the iso directly using my phone.

Otherwise I followed your instructions exactly but got exactly the same error. Sorry

Edit: just for larks I changed the boot order in the bios. Seems accessible now! Wish me luck!

We're in business! I now have windows booting from my pc! Are there some checks I should perform to make sure the system is in good order?

There is one problem, though. My second internal hard drive is not appearing in the 'this pc' menu. My media drive is drive d now and the old d drive is missing. What might be the issue? That's the main storage for the pc but there's no reason windows install should have wiped it

I'll get started with those! In the meantime, could my missing drive be a bios issue? I had to change from the default UEFI to the plain version of the drive in order to get it to let me install windows, and it will only boot on that setting now

I've filled in my system specs as best I can using the tool you suggested and referring to my device manager. If there's anything you think I should add please let me know how to find out and I will add it.

I'll include the results you asked for here. The disk that's not showing up in file explorer is ST1000DM003-1CH162 I think, and it shows up in device manager as well as in these results.

As you can see I've halted the scans of the large backup drive early because they were going to take literally days to complete and I suspect they aren't that useful to you anyway. I can remove it for now if you like as it is just a usb drive.

There's also a screenshot showing the disk management window vs. the file manager window.

I used Macrium and created a restore point too. To be honest I don't really know what Macrium did, but hey, it did it!

    Thanks again for helping me!
