Did chkdsk report any errors when it ran?

It would be good to have a USB install flash drive ready in case you need it.

How to Download Official Windows 10 ISO file from Microsoft

Do you have all you data backed up or do you have a image backup of the hard drive?

I can't run chkdsk again at the moment because I can't get to anywhere from which to run it. The USB booted automatically before but now I get other errors as noted in my edits to the previous post. Sorry, I should have waited

I backed up the windows partition. There are three others on the drive including the one it kept asking me to format. One is called system reserved and I guess the other is bios/boot?

I finally managed to get it to boot from the USb using the bios. I ran chkdsk again on the drive that seems to be the windows installation drive. I'll include a picture of the results because I don't know what to understand from it. Attachment 247150

chkdsk did not find any problems.

How did you backup the windows partition? The normal way is to make a disk image to an external USB attached hard drive of the entire boot drive (all partitiona) using a program like Macrium reflect (free or premium).

I backed it up using one of the included data recovery tools (Macrium or getdataback I forget which as I've used both) when I mistakenly thought it was the problem drive due to confusion over the letters. So I have what appears to be a complete copy of the windows drive on my media drive which happened to be the only thing that had enough space for an extra hundred gigs! (in other news I really need to cut down on data hoarding).

I only backed up the windows partition though, I'll see if I can find a way to do the whole disk. It'll probably take a whole day to complete though.

Is it time to cut my losses and attempt a fresh Windows install?

Do you know what that mysterious partition might be? Do you think it's a real partition or appearing as the result of a problem on the ssd?

4 partitions is normal for a UEFI system. Mine has 5 because I was messing around with stuff.

I wasn't aware of the bios/uefi distinction until now so I have run Macrium again. The effect was no different though I'm afraid. These are the drives I'm seeing including the mystery u drive. The other drives switch letters every time I boot.

Probably a silly question, but why are we doing all of this with the Windows partition rather than the boot partition?

Edit: picture won't attach or upload so here's a list:

Local Disk (C:) 1.17 gb free of 110 (Windows)
Data (D:) 7.06 gb free of 931 (my other hard drive, down loads etc)
Kittenbox (E:) 1.3tb free of 7.27 (media server)
    WinPESE_x64 (F:) 6.15gb free of 7.38 (sd card I'm booting from)
    System reserved (G:) 6.2mb free of 349 (boot/recovery?)
Local disk (H:) 423mb free of 861 (recovery?)
    DVD RW Drive (I:)
Local Disk (U:) (the scary one)
Boot (X:) 470mb free of 472 (looks a bit like Windows drive but almost empty)

    Does this help?

    What is your make/model?
Please fill in your system specs.
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums

Remove or disconnect these if possible while continuing troubleshooting your system.
Data (D:) 7.06 gb free of 931 (my other hard drive, down loads etc)
Kittenbox (E:) 1.3tb free of 7.27 (media server)
--- The idea is to work with only your Local Disk (C:) 1.17 gb free of 110 (Windows).

With the WinPESE_x64 (F:) 6.15gb free of 7.38 (sd card I'm booting from), are you able to see what’s taking up so much space on your Local Disk (C:) 1.17 gb free of 110 (Windows)?
NOTE: Depending on what’s on there, it might be worth acquiring an SSD with double the capacity: maybe even cloning into it.
--- Are you able to see what’s on Local Disk (U:) (the scary one)?

    Do you have install media?
--- There are ways to use Shift + F10 for troubleshooting procedures if that eventually becomes possible to work with.
But if it’s finally decided to do a clean install, you’ll be able to do so.

Will I be able to get accurate system specs from within this USB boot environment?

There's a lot of video files and incomplete downloads on c that I can move if needbe.

Clicking on U: says that it needs formatting. I haven't found a way to see where it is or what is on it.

I can easily remove E: but D: is inside the system itself so I'm not sure what to do about that.

I can create install media if I need to

“Will I be able to get accurate system specs from within this USB boot environment?”
--- I don’t know how I could have overlooked that.
--- Knowing the make & model would be good to know though.

“There's a lot of video files and incomplete downloads on c that I can move if need be.”
--- That would be a good idea.
--- If you could get to about 20% free, it might become possible to boot into it.
--- At this time there isn’t any flexibility to boot into it.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...le-boot-device
The INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE bug check has a value of 0x0000007B. This bug check indicates that the Microsoft Windows operating system has lost access to the system partition during startup.
--- I know I’m stretching the issue but it shouldn’t take long to attempt that idea if it becomes possible to do.

“Clicking on U: says that it needs formatting. I haven't found a way to see where it is or what is on it.”
    --- I haven’t used KYHI’s Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk in quite a while.
--- I was hoping it could provide information on U: unfortunately, in your case what needs to be determined is certainly challenging.

“I can easily remove E: but D: is inside the system itself so I'm not sure what to do about that.”
--- I thought was a separate HDD (1TB?) for your data.
--- Is it possible to remove data from it and attempt to get to about 20% free?

“I can create install media if I need to”
Rich’s recommendation in post #11 is a good one.

The system has two internal hard drives, the ssd where windows is installed, and the other contains the downloads, documents, steam and other large data folders.
I cleared off a lot of the extra data on the windows drive last night, but it hasn't changed anything as far as I can tell.

I'll make a recovery disk just in case, I don't know what else to do
