All of the drive tests indicated failure or predicted imminent failure.
The inaccessible boot device was the latest problem related to the impending failure.
As long as important data is backed up and you have a drive replacement planned you can use the drive until the terminal event.
There could be additional performance problems before the terminal event.

I've made backups of everything, but it sounds like the ssd genuinely needs replacing. How do I go about replacing such a central piece of hardware? It's not trivial, because it is the main drive and is internal. It may sound silly but I've never physically opened the system and would not know how to approach changes within the PC environment itself.

Code:Many SATA devices also need a power cable from the power supply. Such devices include disk drives (HDD), solid state drives (SSD), and optical drives (CD / DVD / Blu-Ray). Please refer to the device’s manual for further information. Many computer cases also require that large SATA devices, such as HDDs, SSDs, and optical drives, be screwed down into the case. Refer to the manual that came with your computer case or your SATA device for further installation instructions. Please do not fold the SATA cable at a 90-degree angle. Data loss may result during transmission otherwise. SATA cables have identical plugs on either sides of the cable. However, it is recommended that the flat connector be connected to the motherboard for space saving purposes.

Thankyou for all of your help and advice. Before I close the thread please can you tell me whether you think the absence of the D drive in the file explorer, whilst still being listed among my disks and devices, is a result of the failure of the c drive which you are asking me to replace? It would be very helpful to know. Thanks again, everyone!
Long thread so I may have missed this, but in Disk Management, have you tried assigning a letter to Disk 1?
Right click on it, Change drive letter ..., Add?
