All of the drive tests indicated failure or predicted imminent failure.
The inaccessible boot device was the latest problem related to the impending failure.
As long as important data is backed up and you have a drive replacement planned you can use the drive until the terminal event.
There could be additional performance problems before the terminal event.

I've made backups of everything, but it sounds like the ssd genuinely needs replacing. How do I go about replacing such a central piece of hardware? It's not trivial, because it is the main drive and is internal. It may sound silly but I've never physically opened the system and would not know how to approach changes within the PC environment itself.

Before I close the thread please can you tell me whether you think the absence of the D drive in the file explorer, whilst still being listed among my disks and devices, is a result of the failure of the c drive which you are asking me to replace? That actually seemed to work! It's 2 since there is already a disk 0 and 1, but I expect that's ok. Thanks again everyone, going to try to find a new hard drive!
