No BSOD, however machine freezes intermittently.

    Hi,

I have an annoying niggle with my desktop, that I am hoping some of the genius's here can help me with.

My machine intermittently freezes, maybe two or three times a week. There is no rhyme or reason/pattern to when this may happen. There is no response from the keyboard or mouse (Alt-Ctrl-Del is impossible), and the rest button on the front of my desktop case does not cause a reset - the only way i can reboot my machine, is to use the power off button on the front of case, and then power back on.

I have attached my dump file.

Many thanks for looking, and for any advice

Only about 5% free space on the C: and D: drives.
I suggest 15% free space on all drives (but you can usually get away with 10% without seeing any significant issues).

Strange error in Device Manager for your USB Mass Storage Device:
Code 47 “Windows cannot use this hardware device… (Code 47)”

    Full Error Message

Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for safe removal, but it has not been removed from the computer. To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again. (Code 47)

    Cause

This error code occurs only if you used the Safe Removal application to prepare the device for removal, or pressed a physical eject button.
I'd like to have a look at your Event Viewer - Administrative log file. It's a summary of all the errors on the system.
    To do this:
    Please do the following:
    - open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
    - expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
    - right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
    - select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
    - save the file as Admin.evtx
    - zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
    - upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

    Lot's of errors in ActiveBridge.exe and SkyRimVR.exe
ActiveBridge belongs to an iolo product of some sort - most likely System Mechanic
SkyRimVR should belong to SkyRim (or the VR program if it's separate).
First step is to uninstall these 2 programs and see if it helps.

papycpu2.sys spit an error one second before the forced shutdown. It's related to Papyrus (Sierra) racing games.
It may just be that it reacted poorly to the shutdown. Next step is to uninstall them and test.

Beyond that, there's not much evidence for what has caused the shutdown.
Have you monitored your temps? What do they look like?

Are you using VR devices? If so, are they fully updated?
Try removing/uninstalling them to see if they contribute to the problem.

Beyond that, there's not much evidence that shows around the time that you force a restart.
That makes it most likely hardware - and monitoring the temps may help with that.

Try the things I suggested and then post back - we'll try other things if these don't help you.
Fast Startup error (may be a Microsoft problem). Temporary solution is to turn off Fast Startup
Error happened 5 seconds before the latest shutdown

Thanks so much for your diagnosis and advice. Its much appreciated.
The Papyrus racing game (Grand Prix Legends) has not been run for a while, so i think that is a red herring...it certainly wasnt running during the last few freezes.

SkyrimVR was only installed two days ago, so again, nothing to do with older, more recent freezes.

I will start to monitor temps - what is a safe temperature range I should be looking for, when system is idle, and when it is under load, such as running an intensive game?

    Thanks again,

    Andy

The racing game was running - otherwise it wouldn't have been spitting errors. Although the most likely problem was caused by a driver that was loaded - the error was in an executable ( .exe) that was running when it happened. There's a lot of stuff that runs in the background that you may not be aware of - check Task Manager and click on the More Details button in the lower left corner to see a lot (but not all).

Idle temps vary a lot - generally 30 to 60șC
Under load they can go from 70 to 100+șC
Also, look for increasing problems with video issues at temp

Broken sensors can report bad temps - which can cause problems even if the system seems to be operating normally.
Look for problems that occur when a certain temp is reached.

I would still uninstall SkyRim and System Mechanic as they're both spitting a lot of errors. It just can't be good for the overall system stability. You can reinstall them after the issues are ironed out.

    Hello again.

I uninstalled Skyrim and System Mechanic, and monitored temps with Speedfan, as suggested (all looked well within the accepted temps).

Unfortunately, I just had another freeze this afternoon. A soon as a reboot had finished, I ran V2 Log Collector, hoping that it would give some additional useful information. I attach it here.

I look forward to any further help you can offer.

    Many thanks,

    Andy

I didn't find any significant errors here. Even ran through the event logs without luck
I'd suggest trying these 2 things before we go any further:
    1) DISM
Open an elevated (Administrator level) PowerShell prompt
    Type:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then press Enter and let it run (it may take a while, so please be patient).
In my experience it may seem to freeze at 40% - but just leave it and it'll finish on it's own.

Then, if that doesn't stop it:
    2) Repair install of Windows 10: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade
Be sure to backup your stuff - just in case!

If these don't work, then I'll have to wonder about a hardware problem - and troubleshooting this sort of a hardware issue is very painful!

Non-BSOD problems are typically troubleshooted in the general, performance, or drivers forums.

In addition to the in place upgrade repair perform these steps:

    1) Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    2) Run Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
Post an image of the test result into the thread
    SeaTools for Windows |
    Seagate

How to use SeaTools for Windows | Seagate Support US

    3) Run HD Sentinel: (free or trial edition)
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Post images of each of these tabs into the thread:
    Overview tab
    Temperature
    SMART
    Disk performance

    4) Turn off Windows fast startup:

Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

    5) Move the page file from G: to C:

    6) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings

    a) > on the advanced tab under startup and recovery > click settings > post an image of the startup and recovery window into the thread

    b) > on the advanced tab under performance > click on settings > on the performance options window > click on the advanced tab > under virtual memory > click on change > post an image of the virtual memory window into the thread

    7) Open Ccleaner > click windows tab > scroll down to system and advanced > post an image into the thread

    8) Uninstall driver booster using the applicable uninstall tool:
COMPLETELY remove IOBit - IObit.Com Forums
    Code:
    Driver Booster 6 6.5.0 IObit 20190627

    9) Uninstall all AVG software using the applicable uninstall tools:
Install AVG on your PC, Mac | AVG installation files

    10) Make sure Windows defender is on

    11) AVG can be reinstalled after one week of computer stability (no BSOD, unexpected shutdowns / restarts, or freezing)

The computer had had BSOD in April 2019 with bugcheck WHEA 0x124.
The logs displayed no BSOD for the past 3 months.
If there are no BSOD once all of the above settings are modified you can open a new thread in one of our other forums to workup freezing.
