    DPC Watchdog Violation and Driver Power State Failure BSODs


    I'm getting BSODs in a consistent manner, usually whenever I'm using PhotoShop or HitFilm Express; and usually either 'DPC Watchdog Violation' or 'Driver Power State Failure'.

    Typically my mouse will freeze for a few seconds, after which it will run fine for a few seconds and then freeze up completely, and finally crash with a BSOD.

    It's happened a few times while playing games, but usually only when I have Chrome open as well. I can use PhotoShop or HitFilm if I make sure to close any other programs beforehand, although if I leave the computer for a few minutes, with PhotoShop or HitFilm running, when I come back and start to work again it will BSOD.

    Has been happening for a while now, and so far this is what I've tried:
    - Updated drivers
    - Reinstalled potential problem drivers
    - Updated BIOS
    - Performed a chkdsk /r /f on both drives
    - Performed a sfc /scannow
    - And finally, as a last resort, I did a 'remove everything' PC Reset.

    The reset seemed like it solved it, but the next day BSODs started occurring again.

    Computer is an MSI GE62VR 7RF Apache Pro laptop.

    CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ 2.80GHz
    RAM: 16GB
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060

    1) Run HD Tune (free or trial version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
    Post images into the thread for results on thee tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    2) Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
    Post an image of the test result into the thread

    3) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings

    a) > on the advanced tab under startup and recovery > click settings > post an image of the startup and recovery window into the thread

    b) > on the advanced tab under performance > click on settings > on the performance options window > click on the advanced tab > under virtual memory > click on change > post an image of the virtual memory window into the thread

    4) Open Ccleaner > click windows tab > scroll down to system and advanced > post an image into the thread

    5) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    6) sfc /scannow
    7) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    8) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    9) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    10) chkdsk /r /v C:
    11) chkdsk /r /v D:

    These may take many hours so plan to run overnight.

    12) Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer. Copy and paste into notepad > save to desktop > post into the thread using one drive or drop box share link:

    13) Make sure that there is no over clocking while troubleshooting.

    14) uninstall the Nvidia GPU driver using DDU (display driver uninstaller)

    15) re-install the Nvidia GPU driver from the Nvidia website

    16) make sure that you check the clean install box and if available install the physx driver.

    17) For any BSOD:

    a) run the V2 log collector to collect new log files

    b) open file explorer> this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
    > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip > post a separate share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    Have attached screenshots for the HDTunePro Benchmark, Full Error Scan, and Health Tests for each drive.

    Am currently running the SeaTools Long Generic Test.

    Had a look at why my SSD was so full, turns out whenever you crash with Photoshop running, the temporary files it creates when working are left in the Temp folder and are not cleaned up, so you have to delete them manually. I deleted about 12 GB worth of these.

    Along with a bit of other tidying up (namely my unorganised downloads folder). I got the spare space on C: to around 55 GB.

    I've had a couple of BSODs since, will run the V2 log collector and grab and upload the memory dumps once the SeaTools test is complete.

    See attached screenshot for Health for C: expanded to include all items, as well as SeaTool Long Generic Test results.

    Now here's the problem, idiot me, in an effort to make more space on my drive, went and ran CCleaner. Thereby deleting all the dumps and crash reports from the last BSODS.

    I will run through the rest of the items on the list, and will record any further BSODs.
    If I don't get any, I will run through the circumstances that caused them previously, and see if I can't repeat it. And I will remember NOT to run CCleaner or Disk Cleanup.

    When available post results for steps #3 - #9.
    The chkdsk /r /v swiches can be ran overnight.
    Were the BSOD before or after replacing Nvidia GPU: nvlddmkm.sys

    1) For Ccleaner uncheck:
    a) Windows log files

    2) For startup and recovery system failure:
    a) Make sure that automatically restart is unchecked

    3) For Virtual Memory:
    a) Highlight C: > move the dot from no paging file to system managed size
    b) Make sure the box is checked to automatically manage paging file size for all drives

    4) For startup and recovery system failure and virtual memory:
    a) After the above changes reboot to maintain settings

    For virtual memory, I can't change the C: paging file size to system managed unless I uncheck the box to automatically manage paging file sizes. Is this OK?

    Also, see attached txt file with chkdisk log for D:, am starting C: now.
