BSOD Critical Process Died error never ending loop

    Hey everyone,

I have a Dell Inspiron 3521. I just upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 and it seemed like it upgraded fine and everything was working until i went to update windows and a few updates tried to download and install and one installed but the other ones weren't working so i went to restart the computer and then i got the BSOD. It has been on a constant loop and the computer has tried to auto repair it to no avail, i have tried to use the advanced tool function to uninstall recent updates and that fails, i have even tried to completely restore the computer back to factory defaults and that fails as well. I have tried safe boot and that doesn't work. I also tried using the command prompt and using sfc /scannow and i get this message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". Below that message is says x:\windows\system32. Does the 32 refer to 32 bit? Because i'm almost positive my windows was a 64 bit (at least the Windows 8.1 was before it). Also, it says my Windows version is 10.0.17763.379.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The system32 directory is present on all versions and does not indicate a 32 bit system.

This was most likely a driver problem and then after the BSOD the system got corrupted in some way. If you can I would recommend that you do a clean install with W10 and then restore any files you need from your backups. If you do not have any backups then use a rescue disk to recover the files that you need before doing the clean install. There are a number of tools on the rescue disk that might help if you did not want to do a clean install. The DISM command is worth trying - see the tutorials below.

ok thanks this is actually a computer that was already wiped clean after a friend gave it to me, so i don't care about any of the files. I just want a working computer. I'll try those suggestions and report back. As a reminder, i cannot access the desktop as I'm stuck in a never ending BSOD loop.

You will need another computer to create the installation media for the clean install. Follow the directions in the tutorial. As your system was already installed and working with W10 it should activate with out needing a product key, just skip that step during the installation. The clean install process will wipe all partitions and start you off with a fresh set of new partitions.

Just wanted to report back, but the DISM restore failed, i received the following error "DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option."

However, i was able to make a USB Windows 10 boot from another computer (oddly one of my windows laptops couldn't do this, but the other could), and i successfully booted the BSOD laptop from my USB drive and now everything works very well! So thank you very much!

    Good news!

Make a backup using Macrium Reflect so that you can easily restore if you have any future problems. Regular backups are essential.

Many thanks to this post. Sadly too much tweaking and messing around got me caught up in a boot loop of BSOD Critical Process Died Error.

Undervolting with Throttle stop ( core cache -250 killed it)
    Bad Audio THX Driver re-install
    Panic system restore point.
Mistweak of XTU ram overclocking RAM

Looking back i was asking for trouble.

Thanks to your fast and friendly guides i got my system back using a clean windows 10 install.
Tried the recovery but it would not load , the damage was too great.

HUGE CAVEAT the Evoogaming laptop does not recognize the keyboard or the touchpad in bootable recovery tools?!!!!
Had to use a wireless mouse and keyboard ( logitech dinovo) to run anything in that environment.

Thankfully the native mouse and keyboard worked for Clean windows 10 install.

Now on to get drivers back and stop messing with so much at one time and backup frequently. It was fun learning about and a bit scary, laptop is less than 2 weeks old. Playing with house money is much different.

    Cheers
