    BSOD on startup, occurs regularly


    Hi,

    I've been having BSOD issues with the PC I've built when I restart it. This happens 1 in every 20 times of restarting I estimate.

    Looking a BlueScreenView it says the BSOD is being caused by the ntoskrnl.exe each time, which I understand is likely memory related.

    I've tried;
    -Running Windows Memory Diagnostic, no errors.
    -Run Memtest86+, no errors.
    -Reinstalled Windows twice, still getting BSOD.

    I've noticed the BSOD message is different almost every time. I've only been able to pull the most recent BSOD log (as they auto delete).

    Only other issue I have had with the PC is occasionally the monitor on the graphics card doesn't display, as though it doesn't detect any input.

    The dump shows memory corruption as the cause of the BSOD.
    Code:

    Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiDemoteCombinedPte+40 )
    Two primary reasons for this, defective RAM or a device driver problem.

    First thing to do is see if you have a RAM problem. You have DDR4 memory so use memtest86:

    Both of these are diagnostic tools designed to test Random Access Memory (RAM) for faults. They will verify that:
    • RAM will accept and keep random patterns of data sent to it
    • There are no errors when different parts of memory try to interact
    • There are no conflicts between memory addresses

    They run from bootable media to isolate the RAM from the system, no other components are taken into account during the test.

    warning   Warning
    MemTest86+ and Memtest86 need to run for at least 8 passes to be anywhere near conclusive, anything less will not give a complete analysis of the RAM. The new version of Memtest86 only allows 4 passes for the free version so run it twice, back to back.

    If you are asked to run MemTest86+ or Memtest86 by a Ten Forums member make sure you run the full 8 (or 4+4) passes for conclusive results. If you run less than 8 passes you will be asked to run it again.

    Both of these diagnostics have been known to discover errors in RAM in later passes than the eighth pass. This is for information only; if you feel there is a definite problem with the RAM and 8 passes have shown no errors feel free to continue for longer.

    Running 8 passes of MemTest86+ or 4+4 passes of Memtest86 is a long and drawn out exercise and the more RAM you have the longer it will take. It's recommended to run it overnight, starting just before you go to bed and leave it overnight.

    Driver Verifier
    is a diagnostic tool built into Windows 10, it is designed to verify both native Microsoft drivers and third party drivers. Driver Verifier's verification process involves putting heavy stress on drivers with the intention of making bad, outdated, incompatible or misbehaving drivers fail. The required result is a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) which will generate a crash dump for debugging purposes.

    Machines exposed to Driver Verifier may run very sluggishly due to the stress being applied to the drivers.

    Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable in Windows 10

    Pay close attention to PART TWO and make sure the correct boxes are checked.

    It is not advised to run Driver Verifier for more than 48 hours at a time. Disable Driver Verifier after 48 hours or after receiving a BSOD, whichever happens soonest.

    Always create a Restore Point prior to enabling Driver Verifier so you have a way to recover if it goes haywire. Seldom does but it can happen.

    What we're looking for is a verifier generated BSOD with a mini dump that will tell us what driver caused it. If you get a BSOD, rerun the Beta log collector and upload the resulting zip file.


    Any BSOD you get, please run the Beta log collector and upload the resulting zip file, not just when running Driver Verifier.

    There were multiple different types of bugchecks:
    3B
    1A
    F7
    1E
    7E

    The mini dump that was collected and debugged was 7E.
    There were no misbehaving drivers.

    The logs displayed corruption of the drive file system.

    The BIOS is out of date.

    Perform the following steps:

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    6) chkdsk /r /v
    This may take hours to run so plan to run overnight.
    Run on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /r /v C: or chkdsk /r /v D: changing the drive letter to the applicable drive.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /r /v
    The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

    Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
    process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be

    reboot

    7) Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer. Copy and paste into notepad > save to desktop > post into the thread using one drive or drop box share link:

    8) Make sure that there is no over clocking while troubleshooting.

    9) Sometimes there are problems in the bios that produce bsod.

    11) To ensure that there are no improper bios settings please reset the bios.

    12) Sometimes there can be failure to boot after resetting the bios.

    13) Backup the computer files to another drive or to the cloud.

    14) Make a backup image using Macrium:

    Thanks for your help guys, I have followed your instructions and have the following results;

    -No errors in the Memtest86 through 8 passes as shown in the attachments.
    -No misbehaving drivers through Driver Verifier (was unable to reproduce BSOD).
    -"Test1" file shows results from sfc, dism and wmic.
    -"26-04 chkdsk" shows result from C drive I did today. I also added one from a few days ago (which must have run automatically) - "23-04 chkdsk".
    -I successfully updated the BIOS to 1205 version. Also performed a reset to Default.
    -Turned off Fast Startup.
    -After all that I receieved another BSOD, log is attached.

    Looks like the .dmp file has disappeared from the BSOD the other day, and I haven't been able to replicate a BSOD since.

    -New Restore Point has been created.
    -Attached images of Memtest results (sorry forgot to in last post). Memtest1 is passes 1-4 and Memtest2 is passes 5-8.
    -Attached chkdsk output on D drive.
    -Attached output of recoveros command.
    -Performed Macrium Backup and saved to external HDD.

    This link has 3 customized simultaneous tests while using windows driver verifier:

    This link has 19 customized simultaneous tests while using windows driver verifier:
    Driver Verifier-- tracking down a mis-behaving driver. - Microsoft Community

    Sometimes when using the tool it may impact performance and boot times.

    Increase the number of simultaneous tests by 3 - 4 / hour.

    Ideally the tool is run with the 19 tests in the Microsoft link.

    If there are any problems using the tool you can remove and add tests so that all drivers are exposed to these tests.


    For any new BSOD:
    a) post a new BETA zip
    b) open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for C:\windows\memory.dmp > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip > post a share link into the thread

    Not getting any BSOD from the Verifier tests.
    Attached is the settings I ran them at, confirming all non-Microsoft drivers were selected.

    I will continue to monitor over the next week or so and update if I receive a BSOD.

    Unless there is another way to force a BSOD that isn't driver related?

    1) The bugchecks were:

    139
    7E

    The memory dump was for the bugcheck 139.

    2) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings

    a) > on the advanced tab under startup and recovery > click settings > post an image of the startup and recovery window into the thread

    b) > on the advanced tab under performance > click on settings > on the performance options window > click on the advanced tab > under virtual memory > click on change > post an image of the virtual memory window into the thread

    3) The next time there are no BSOD while using windows driver verifier open administrative command prompt and copy and paste:

    verifier /querysettings

    When this has completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread


    4) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

    System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
    In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
    After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

    Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)


    5) Run Windows driver verifier for an additional 36 hours.
    If there are no BSOD or if there are BSOD witout definitive misbehaving drivers then plan to test the computer using safe mode.

    zbook, I've attached the screen shots you requested, updated Bio too.

    No BSOD's have occurred since last reported, although the PC is noticeably much more laggy with all 19 verification's running while using Windows.

    I also failed to mention that the first time I BSOD yesterday I had plugged in a scanner into the PC via USB port. Unable to replicate the issue now so could have been coincidence.

    Scanner is a Kodak i2900.

    Will continue to monitor for BSOD's but they appear to happen very infrequently and almost always on restart.
