Dell Radeon HD 8850M driver issues and BSOD

I own an Inspiron 15R 5537 to which I just did a fresh format and installed Windows 10 1809. Got all the drivers from Dell using their SupportAssist software. The issue is: when connected to the power source, windows won't boot (gives me a black screen), if plugged after the computer is on, it will freeze after a few minutes and sometimes drop a BSOD with the error code DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE. I've analyzed the crash log with WhoCrashed and it showed that the graphics card was responsible, so I retried the driver from Dell (which is an old version) with no luck, tried the most recent driver from AMD's website, but it freezes on install. I've ran the native diagnostics utility from the launch menu, all tests passed. Right now, I've managed a workaround by disabling the graphics card on Device Manager, but that is clearly no solution.

Is this driver related and should I try other driver versions or could this be Windows related or even a hardware failure that the diagnostics didn't get?

    Thanks for all help

I have a Dell Inspiron 15, 5577 model. I did a clean install of Win 10 and let Windows install all drivers and there are no problems.
However, my 5577 model only uses the NVIDIA for gaming, regular operations is with the Intel CPU graphics. Although the 5577 was sold as a gaming laptop by Dell I use it for my recording studio.

I didn't look at your dump file, but were you having any problems before the reinstall? Usually someone doesn't reinstall unless there were some problems.

Well, not this same problem, but Windows was slow and messy, it had been years since my last format, so I thought it would be good, I already had my online backup and I could reinstall everything I needed via Chocolatey, so it was no trouble. Also, I should add: I was running the same driver from Dell, but on Windows 10 1803. Besides that, in the meantime the computer was disassembled and reassembled (by a professional) in order to exchange my broken plastic parts.

As the PC was worked on, there is no telling what that could have inadvertantly caused.

Well, I do intend to take it back so the hardware part can be rechecked, but I'd like to first try everything I can do on my end...

There is no crash dump file so I can't provide any insight into the actual BSOD error. Did you save a copy of the mini-dump file?

Judging by your description I would suspect there is a problem with the power management of the graphics card. This could be driver related or a motherboard issue. Can you get it to start in safe mode even with the graphics card enabled? Windows will use a basic MS display driver instead of the AMD one.

I don't have the mini-dump, my guess is WhoCrashed erased it or something . However, I remember that upo analysing it, this was the search query it gave me relative to the error: "atikmdag.sys Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE"

I can start in safe mode, as when the install of the newest driver failed, I've used DDU on safe mode to remove it and then install the one provided by Dell. As for the motherboard, I've also updated the bios (via Dell's provided driver), but the problem was present before and after this update.

    atikmdag.sys

    Driver Description:
ATI Video driver (remove the Catalyst Control Center and only install the Display Driver)
    Driver Update Site: http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx
Get from OEM (Dell in this case) for laptops

You can try completely uninstalling the driver using DDR then reinstall only the Display Driver from the Dell site

AMD Radeon HD 7730/8730/7670/8670/8850/8870M Driver 18 Oct 2016

Remove and install latest video drivers:

Get the latest driver for your card here: Support for Inspiron 15R 5537
Completely uninstall the current display drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from WagnardMobile here: Official Download Here. Do this in Safe Mode. Then do a custom install of only the Display driver.

See if that gets rid of the problem.

The log files are in a foreign language and cannot be troubleshooted.
Please change the default language to English during the troubleshooting.

Add, Remove, and Change Display Language in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Then post a new BETA zip.

The computer has AMD switchable graphics.
The logs indicate that the AMD GPU was disabled.

It would be useful to have BSOD dump files to troubleshoot.
GPU drivers can appear in dump files when they do not cause the BSOD crash.
They may be participants or may appear after the crash.
These findings may or may not be apparent when using Whocrashed or Bluescreenview.

The Dell diagnostics tests the Intel GPU Igdkmd64.sys or IGFX when the AMD is disabled.

There are multiple driver versions that can be tried to see if you can configure a stable computer environment.
    Sometimes this requires older drivers.

If multiple driver versions produce BSOD then the option for a notebook computer is to get it serviced either by Dell or a local computer store.
