    BSOD's randomly since I built my computer about 3 months ago, 3 today


    Ever since I put together my computer back in early October, I have been getting random BSOD's while trying to play games such as Fortnite, CS:GO, BO4, and R6S. When I built my computer, I copied Windows over from an old Western Digital 500GB on to a Samsung 970 Evo 250GB installed in my system. I thought that was the cause of the BSOD's, so I did a fresh install of Windows. It seemed like it fixed the issue, but the BSOD's started again in about a week.

    I hadn't blue screened in a while, but today, for an unknown reason, I blue screened 6 times. The first three stop codes seemed memory related, so I ran memtest and it did find issues. However, I tested both RAM sticks alone, and neither of them failed the memtest. I then ram the memtest with both ram sticks installed and it didn't fail! I thought it was just RAM that had dirty pins or wasn't seated correctly, but after trying to play Fortnite, it blue screened another time. What failed was a driver from AMD, atikmdag.sys. Then, about an hour later, also while trying to play Fortnite, it blue screened twice due to hardware.sys, something else driver related. So now I am confused as to whether the BSOD's are memory related, graphics related, or something else. Help would be very much appreciated!

    Hi swiegman8,

    Welcome to the the Ten Forums BSOD forum.

    There were five mini dump files debugged.
    The misbehaving drivers identified were AMD GPU drivers.

    1) Uninstall everything AMD using Display driver uninstaller and install new drivers from the AMD website.

    2)On the AMD web site be sure the "clean install" box is checked and only install the graphics driver.

    3) Turn off Windows fast startup:
    Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    4) After the above steps run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread:

    5) For any BSOD
    a) Run the BETA log collector and post a new zip into the thread
    b) Open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for C:\windows\memory.dmp > if the file size is , 1.5 GB then zip and post a share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    Hello, thank you for the help. I uninstalled all AMD display drivers as instructed, and reinstalled AMD Display Driver version 18.12.2. Everything seemed to be fine, but upon reboot after installing new drivers, I BSOD'd again, with the error APC_INDEX_MISMATCH.

    Open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for: C:\windows\memory.dmp > zip > post a share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    If a replacement AMD driver causes BSOD then another driver can be tried.
    If an additional driver causes BSOD then a swap is indicated to test the hardware.
    See if you can find a friend, neighbor, relative, or local computer store to swap GPU cards.

    There should be two tests:
    Test a new card in the problematic computer
    Test the card from the problematic computer in another computer

    If this driver is stable then there will be some stress tests but this is after several days of stability.

    I just BSOD about ten minutes after installing driver 18.12.3, or version 25.20.15003.5010. I am going to try rolling back to a previous driver, 18.12.1.1, which I had no issues with before.

    I was not able to convert the memory.dmp file to a .zip file so it is uploaded as an uncompressed file here: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

    I am not home at the moment, I will check for the memory dump files and upload it to OneDrive later today when I am home. I was just wondering if this issue may have been causing the blue screens: When installing some new parts in my PC, I had to unplug the graphics card power from the PSU, and when I plugged it in, it may have been a little bit loose. I checked before I left yesterday, and It was loose, by about a quarter inch or so in the PSU. I plugged it the rest of the way back in, but haven't actually checked if it fixed the issue. Is this a common issue in PC's or not? That would explain a lot, as the BSODs were not nearly as frequent before I installed that new part.
