The update can usually be done from within the BIOS menu. Make sure the system is stable running in the BIOS menus for a while before you attempt anything.

    BIOS updated successfully.

Upon trying to install Windows 10 Education (non-DISM method), as the system was about to restart after "Finishing Up", I got a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD.

The PC rebooted twice, and I actually got into the post-reboot setup (picking language and keyboard layout etc.).

I am going to try and find a minidump file, and then attempt the DISM install again.

I attempted the Windows 10 Home DISM install and got RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED at 2.0% of the way through applying the image.

Update: I was able to get through the DISM install, but got the KERNEL_SECURITY BSOD.

I restarted the PC and got the RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED when the second part of setup was trying to run.

When I went back in to try and retrieve a memory file, I (for the first time) got the RESOURCE BSOD when trying to open notepad through the command prompt.

After once more restarting, I got the memory file :

This was a mini-dump file and I can't get a lot of useful information from it.

I'm kind of at a loss for what to do next.

Should I keep trying to make it crash to generate memory dumps?

    Wow.

I think Phil said it was within Defender so I wounder if you could install Win 7 again although you said the BSOD's started when you were on 7.

I would think if you can't install 7 then this would point more to some unique hardware error. I know you can run Memtest and Ubuntu.

That link I posted back in post 14 should allow you to get Win 7.

There is also a recovery disk on the forum and it would be interesting if you could boot from this.

It comes in a 32 bit and 64 bit version. I think I would try the 64 bit first.

Thanks Ken, I'll try and see if I can get 7 running. Will I be able to get it up if I don't have a product key?

What happened to your COA sticker?

At some point you will need product key.

As stupid as this sounds when I built my PC a few years ago I got the key through my school (as I'm doing now with Windows 10), and they have since stopped offering licenses to 7, and I cant even get to the page that showed my key. I didn't write it down as I assumed I could access the page, so here I am.

    Ouch.

Do you have a old backup you could restore?
