    Multiple BSODS on New Laptop (Will Update Thread In Between Crashes)


    Amazon.com: HP Spectre x360,15t Touch,4K UHD,i7-8705G,Radeon 4GB RX Vega M,Fingerprint,Num-PAD,HP Stylus,1TB SSD,16GB RAM,Win 10 PRO, 3 Years McAfee Internet Security,B Accessories
    That's the exact model I'm using, sorry for the garbage formatting. Laptop is randomly BSODing anywhere between every 1-30ish minutes.

    Edit 1:
    I just got the computer today, and while going through the initial startup (of win10), it actually hung up at the part where you choose if it's a personal computer or going to be used for an organization. Not sure if it restarted it by itself or my mother restarted it, but I walked away for a few minutes and had to redo the initial setup/startup phase. After that, the first BSOD and the next few BSODs happened while browsing data whilst installing steam and discord. Those BSODs were dealing with page_fault_in_nonpaged_area, and possibly another. Finally it stopped happening so frequently after I finished downloaded steam, discord, streamlabs obs, and a few games, but now it's BSODing due to other reasons as well. The 2nd, or 3rd to most recent is a stop code of unexpected_kernel_mode_trap, and what failed was dxgmms2.sys.

    Edit 3 (Recreating Situation):
    I've retyped this like 10 times now so I'm not putting everything here that I initially wrote. Played rocket league for like 5-6 games without any issues (had chrome closed). Opened chrome and within 5 minutes BSOD. Other times I've noticed it BSOD without chrome being open was when downloading games. It also BSODs with too many tabs open in Chrome (I've had about 10 tabs open usually when it crashes). Going to try downloading LoL to see if that crashes it, and try to play some LoL to see if the game might force BSODs as well. Troubleshooting is fun

    P.S. it wouldn't let me edit the post anymore so further updates are coming from comments. Sad thing is that it let me do it two times for this edit, but I BSODed both times, and now I have to post comments reeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    I'm hoping that's not the case because if it ends up needing to be replaced it's going to take forever with Christmas holidays right around the corner. It's supposed to be my all purpose computer for streaming, light gaming (after my experience with having to play rocket league with everything on minimal quality settings), music production, graphic design, coding, and schoolwork, with the latter being super important since I don't currently have a laptop that I can currently use easily for schoolwork. I have to remote into my desktop which is annoying.

    1) A brand new computer should not be having BSOD.

    2) Download and install HP Diagnostics Windows: (right upper corner of this webpage)
    HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

    3) Click system tests > system extensive test > post an image of the test logs into the thread

    4) Click on component tests and run the interactive audio playback test

    5) Use the snipping tool and post an image of the HP Diagnostics Windows log into the thread


    6) Open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for C:\windows\memory.dmp > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip > post a share link (one drive, drop box, or google drive into the thread)

    7) If the HP diagnostics display faulty RAM then remove one RAM module and retest to differentiate good from malfunctioning RAM.


    8) If the HP diagnostics pass all tests then run memtest86 for 8 or more passes

    A significant portion of the testing can be performed overnight.
    Just 1 error is a fail and testing can be aborted.
    Then remove all visible RAM modules, re-seat one module and test for 8 or more passes.
    Then test another RAM module in the same DIMM for 8 or more passes.
    For all RAM testing please use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post images into the thread.

    Agree with Zbook and Bree, this is a brand new computer. It should not be having problems like this. You have a defective computer, they owe you one that works without problems. Take it back.

    Amazon return policy and turn around for replacement is excellent so I don't think you'll be waiting long. Contact them and get the process started. All you are going to do by messing with it now is taking a chance on voiding the warranty.

    1) A brand new computer should not be having BSOD.

    2) Download and install HP Diagnostics Windows: (right upper corner of this webpage)
    HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

    3) Click system tests > system extensive test > post an image of the test logs into the thread

    4) Click on component tests and run the interactive audio playback test

    5) Use the snipping tool and post an image of the HP Diagnostics Windows log into the thread


    6) Open file explorer > this PC > C: > in the right upper corner search for C:\windows\memory.dmp > if the file size is < 1.5 GB then zip > post a share link (one drive, drop box, or google drive into the thread)

    7) If the HP diagnostics display faulty RAM then remove one RAM module and retest to differentiate good from malfunctioning RAM.


    8) If the HP diagnostics pass all tests then run memtest86 for 8 or more passes

    A significant portion of the testing can be performed overnight.
    Just 1 error is a fail and testing can be aborted.
    Then remove all visible RAM modules, re-seat one module and test for 8 or more passes.
    Then test another RAM module in the same DIMM for 8 or more passes.
    For all RAM testing please use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post images into the thread.

    so i just went ahead and ran memtest earlier today, but during the first pass, around like the 7-9 test(s) it locked up. im not too sure ir that means its still a ram problem or not but my parents and i are going ahead and sending it back. (we bought it sirectly from hp due to a deal my mother was able to get with them but it has the same specs as the amazon one). sending this on my phone atm but i will update it again when i get back to an actual computer and not my phone

    Sorry, I'm back at my college apartment now, and my laptop is at my parents house. For the HP Diagnostics, everything passed when doing the strenuous testing. For memtest86, it froze up during the first pass around like test 7-8. I just decided to go ahead and send it back Monday (my parents are gonna ship it back and call HP customer service and talk to them about it). I just wasn't sure if something was faulty or defective hardware wise, but I'm thinking it was something to do with the RAM since it would only crash after it hit a certain point (had 16 GB, but was crashing after like 20+% usage).

    As long as you got a return merchandise authorization (RMA) you are set.
    HP may have wanted the results of their software diagnostic testing.
    Alternatively they sometimes send software via email to run on the computer to perform more comprehensive diagnostics.

    If you need to you can copy and paste the BSOD findings posted in this thread in the communications with HP.

    When you get the replacement computer make a backup image.
    These software companies have free and pay versions depending upon the features desired:
    Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.
    Macrium is most widely use in Ten Forums.

    With a backup image if there are problems with: malware, ransomware, operating system or registry corruption, failure to boot, etc. you can commonly restore the image in less than one hour.
