Left Laptop on idle on Desktop, then BSOD

    Hi Ten Forums
I need some help with a recent BSOD on my new laptop, as the title suggests I was on my laptop which I left idle with the opera browser on. Then it crashed, I have just recently purchased this at the beginning of the month, and I had my first BSOD on a Dell G5 5587 laptop.

I haven’t changed much from the machine other than the laptop memory from the 8gb memory to some g-skill 16gb ddr4 2666mhz memory. I would like to know if it’s the memory that’s causing it to crash or is it something else as the memory is brand new so I have 30 days to send back to the shop where I purchased it from. I have attached the bsod log files as requested, I hope you can help.

    Kind Regards
    Samuel

    1) There was only one mini dump file collected for debugging.
    2) There were many drivers involved in the crash.
    3) Are the RAM modules mismatched? (Different manufacturers?)
There is no testing that can be done to evaluate the problems with mismatched RAM.
The RAM modules can be tested together and pass and still cause BSOD.
It's best to used matched RAM (same manufacturer and RAM size)
A confirmation for mismatched RAM can be done by using one RAM module at a time and confirming that the computer environment is stable. Then adding the second RAM module and seeing BSOD. This may take significant time though for the days of testing.

    4) There are two log collectors: DM and BETA
The beta log collector will collect more useful folders and files.
The beta log collector is near the bottom of this webpage:
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums
(Use extract or extract all > open)
Post a new beta zip into this thread

    5) Dell will want you to run their diagnostic testing and report the results.
Run the full tests now and report the results into the thread.
    Support for Dell G5 15 5587 | Diagnostics | Dell US

    6) Uninstall Malwarebytes using the applicable uninstall tool:
    https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

    7) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
    a) Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
    The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is16 GB of RAM on the computer.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
    b) When Memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

Try updating the driver for your Killer network card.

One of the errors the dump shows is this:

Hi guys sorry for the delay, hope you didn't think I was ignoring you. I have had to do all the steps you had asked me in stages. Going between home and work, it has been exhausting but I have my results below. Please see my responses marked in Bold. Hope this helps thanks.

    1) There was only one mini dump file collected for debugging. Sorry I didn't realise you required both dump files I attached the other zip file below2) There were many drivers involved in the crash.3) Are the RAM modules mismatched? (Different manufacturers?) Then adding the second RAM module and seeing BSOD. This may take significant time though for the days of testing. No they came as a kit it's GSkill 2666Mhz DDR4 CL19 16GB kit, 8gb per dimm. After doing the memory test that showed it had failed. I have only kept one module in the laptop currently. I may swap back to the 8gb memory that came with the laptop until I can find another of decent stable memory4) There are two log collectors: DM and BETAThe beta log collector will collect more useful folders and files. The beta log collector is near the bottom of this webpage:BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums(Use extract or extract all > open)Post a new beta zip into this threadI have attached the beta zip folder to the post please see attached. 5) Dell will want you to run their diagnostic testing and report the results. 1) For the RAM testing the images displayed errors on pass 2 and pass 3 for 8 GB RAM.
    2) Were the tests on the same module or different modules?
    3) Just one error is a fail and you can immediately abort the testing.

    4) The computer has DDR4 RAM. To verify again the problems with the RAM please retest the RAM modules using Memtest:
    https://www.memtest86.com/

    5) RAM modules should be used in pairs and should be identical to have the fewest incompatibility problems.

    6) There were approximately 5 non-Microsoft drivers involved in the crash.

    7) BSOD can be caused by misbehaving drivers or malfunctioning hardware or both.
The Memtest86+ version 5.01 displayed malfunctioning hardware.
Once there is good hardware the computer environment can be evaluated for misbehaving drivers.

This is the current information on the RAM modules:

    Location : DIMM A

    MemoryType : DDR4

    8) There are many RAM manufacturers and competitive prices can be shopped on the web.
Some of the manufacturers may have scanners to make sure you get the proper RAM for the motherboard.

    9) Sometimes memory dumps are needed in the troubleshooting of BSOD.
The log collector will collect mini dumps but not memory dumps.
Windows will delete memory dumps when the free space on the Windows drive is < 25 GB.
Sometimes new memory dumps are large in size and may exceed 2 GB.
    10) Please increase the free space on the Windows drive so that there is > 30 GB free space.

    Code:
DriveLetter Size (GB) Free (GB) Device Path

    1) For the RAM testing the images displayed errors on pass 2 and pass 3 for 8 GB RAM.

    2) Were the tests on the same module or different modules?
Same kit of modules I did one at a time as requested, hence why I had two screenshots for each module

    3) Just one error is a fail and you can immediately abort the testing. No Worries

    4) The computer has DDR4 RAM. To verify again the problems with the RAM please retest the RAM modules using Memtest:https://www.memtest86.com/5) RAM modules should be used in pairs and should be identical to have the fewest incompatibility problems.

I had run memtest86 with the memory in pairs it ran over night and I left it running until 9 passes then i closed it. Please see attached image for details.

    6) There were approximately 5 non-Microsoft drivers involved in the crash.

I think it is the memory as the laptop was a lot smoother to begin with when I was using the stock 8gb x4GB modules that originally came with the laptop. With the new memory it feels stuttery, jittery and there's a delay that you can feel. Just by clicking icons or on the start menu.
I did install the recommended Killer NIC driver that Dell advised me to install. Also I ran Intel's auto driver scanner and it said that my Bluetooth, Wifi AP and UHD Display Drivers were out of date which I have also updated to the latest version.

I have my memory which I purchased on RMA so I may buy the memory from crucial. Purchased from them before for friends and family never had any problems with them.

I have freed up the space somewhat, most of the space is being taken up by the recovery partitions that came with the laptop. It's now over 33GB free. Please note that I have a 120GB SSD as the OS Boot drive that came stock with the laptop.

    Looks good.
    Nice progress.

When you have things the way you prefer post a new zip for troubleshooting.

If there are other problems detected they can be reported and troubleshooted.

If there are no problems then you can mark the thread as solved.

When using Memtest86+ please use the latest version, 5.01.
