    WDBackupService.exe - Application Error

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

Each time I log out at night and shut down my computer after a day's worth of it being on, I get the following message above.

I use the Western Digital External Hard Drive to back up my photos instead of having to store it on my computer hard drive.

Is there way to fix this to stop it from happening?

It happens on my HP Desktop.

    Hi Jesse

Have you tried updating your software at WD. Their backup product looks like it was just updated in the last couple of months.

You used the word backup but if I understand you correctly the only place your pictures are located is on this WD device. If this is the only HDD with your photos, your photos are at risk.

Just working with a client and the only copy they had was on one lone drive.

I haven't tried to update the software but I will look for a new version of WD Backup. However, it says everything is updated in the Western Digital tray. Why are my photos at risk? Where should I back them up to? I was told by other photographers to back them up to the hard drive so it won't take up space on my computer hard drive.

Backing up is usually the process of having a second copy. When you say you have a backup, say like UPS power supply, it is an alternate. Having two pens with you, one is a back up.

What you are doing is okay if you leave your pictures on your computer and store them in an alternate spot, backed up, to WD.

You could also copy to cloud or another WD. Two copies.

All storage devices die and if your pictures are only on one HDD they die with it. There are recovery services but they are expensive and provide no guarantees.

Personally I don't call any device that is connected and turned on a backup. If ransomware or some other virus gets into system then everything is at risk. A true backup is copied to and disconnected.

Have you tried a clean boot, then used your product and then logout. Could be a software conflict.

@Caledon Ken, I have already done that. The WD Backup software is what hangs up on log off at night. I am just trying to figure out how to fix that issue or how to work around it.

Sorry Jesse. So you did a clean boot, not install, and with no other software running is still gave you error message.

When did this start, can you associate it with a change, either something you added or a set of Windows updates.

    Have you run sfc /scannow

@Caledon Ken, I followed a tutorial of how to do a clean boot and then proceed with an sfc /scannow scan. I disabled the WD software and the error message went away. But I haven't initially ran the scan yet. Shall I do so to see what the scan finds?

I would say that it started after I first installed this software.

Yes by all means I would do the scan.

I think the idea of the clean boot is to disable all third party software and services except WD. Then I would reboot. Windows and the WD software should be running. Then do what ever you do to cause the failure. If it does not fail you add x number of programs and try again.

If it fails you know there is a conflict within the group you added back.

Let's see what the scan yields.

When I search that error code within WD's forum there is an immediate hit with no solution.
