BSOD - Windows 10 - New hard drive

    Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate it if someone could help asap. All was working fine earlier today, but after leaving my pc in sleep mode to go make a cup of tea, I came back and it wouldn't wake up. So I forced it to reboot. Since then it, it gives a BSOD error as soon as windows is supposed to boot up. So far I've swapped the older Samsung 840 ssd to a brand new Crucial 500gb, fresh installed win10, but it's still doing exactly the same.

I've also swapped the sata cables and connectors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Thanks for your help ztruker. I've got some good news. After spending hours trying to mess with windows installations, swapping of hard drives, sata cables, I took out one of the two ballastix (DDR3 - 1600) memory chips and bingo! It booted up instantly without any hitches.

So it must be faulty ram?

If so, I'll need to replace it as I now only have 4gb.

My motherboard is a Biostar TA970 and I'm not sure what ram type to replace it with.... Can you please help with this?

    FYI, I want 16gb.

Goto crucial.com. Use their scanner to see what type of ram you can use.

Spec sheet for the motherboard says:
MEMORY Support Dual Channel DDR3 2000(OC)/1866/1600/1333/1066/800 MHz
    4 x DDR3 DIMM Memory Slot
Max. Supports up to 64GB Memory

and the Memory support page is here: BIOSTAR TA970 Ver. 5.0/5.1/5.2

You have 4 slots so 4 4GB DIMMs will give you the 16GB you want. I buy all my RAM from Crucial but you can get it wherever it's cheapest.

What I see @ Crucial is this:

Thanks very much Ztruker for such informative info and links. The problem is that the ram since I bought it 5yrs ago has surprisingly increased in price. Don't forget I'm in UK where it costs a lot more. One suggestion by one of the forum supporters was that I test the faulty chip with memtest86, just incase it's not actually faulty and had simply unseated from it's slot....I'm not so sure, but I'd like your opinion.

$150 (US) for 16GB is not bad. Not sure whet it would cost you in the UK.

Put the ram back in. If the problem happens again then the likelihood of it being defective it pretty high,
Swap it with the other ram. Does the problem happen. If yes then again it's almost certain to be defective.
To me this is a far better way to diagnose a problem that run a memory test program like memtest86.

I you test it use memtest86+ ver 5.01 and see what it shows. The best way to so this is to let it run over night.

    ===================================================
Follow this tutorial: MemTest86+ - Test RAM - Windows 10 Forums

MemTest86+ is a diagnostic tool designed to test Random Access Memory (RAM) for faults. MemTest86+ will verify that:

    • RAM will accept and keep random patterns of data sent to it
    • There are no errors when different parts of memory try to interact
    • There are no conflicts between memory addresses

Memtest86+ runs from bootable media to isolate the RAM from the system, no other components are taken into account during the test.

    warning   Warning
MemTest86+ needs to run for at least 8 passes to be anywhere near conclusive, anything less will not give a complete analysis of the RAM.

If you are asked to run MemTest86+ by a Ten Forums member make sure you run the full 8 passes for conclusive results. If you run less than 8 passes you will be asked to run it again.

    Note   Note
MemTest86+ has been known to discover errors in RAM in later passes than the eighth pass. This is for information only; if you feel there is a definite problem with the RAM and 8 passes have shown no errors feel free to continue for longer.

Running 8 passes of MemTest86+ is a long and drawn out exercise and the more RAM you have the longer it will take. It's recommended to run MemTest86+ just before you go to bed and leave it overnight.

Take a picture when done and post in the forum please.
