Installing Wrong Driver Caused WDF_VIOLATION

Okay I am back home and can work on my computer again. Let’s walk through this step by step. Let me know if any more questions.

From Windows recovery, normally drive D: is the correct letter for your Windows files. If you need help finding the correct drive letter then, copy and paste the following command:

bcdedit |find "osdevice" (this will display the correct Windows drive letter)

See following example:
D:\WINDOWS\system32>bcdedit |find "osdevice"
osdevice partition=D:

Once at command prompt type the following commands in order.

1. d:
2. cd d:\windows\system32\
3: driverquery > 0 & notepad 0 - this will open notepad with the list of drivers.

4.Stay in notepad or open a new notepad by typing notepad
5. Go to File > Open
6. Change “Files of Type” box to All Files
7. Browse to driver or drivers you want to Delete and try and delete the file or files. If it will not let you then let me know and we can do it from command line as well.

I am back home and ready to try. Correct me if I am wrong but am I not trying to delete the bad driver that installed on C:\
So, should I do the above command against C:\

Starting from a fresh opening of the Command Prompt, which shows X:\
Then bcdedit |find "osdevice" shows partition=E:
From memory, Windows is installed onto C:\ (the SSD drive). That drive has a second 25GB partition that Lenovo stores all of it's drivers for my use. The laptop has a second HDD which is a mechanical one. I have two partitions on it, named D:\ (where I copy all my data onto, and T:\ for other storage. The laptop has a hidden Recovery Partition.

Why is bcdedit |find "osdevice" not showing C:\
NOTE: I assume that when you show speech marks ("), I am to include them in the Command Prompt input?

I am traveling to see family this weekend as well so won’t be online to much. Please dave and upload the drivers text file that you opened from notepad after running the driverquery command early.

Thanks for your advice on Driver updating. I will certainly follow it as I have learned a painful lesson about the stupidity of ignoring the warning box that popped up when I was installing the driver.

The Elan Touchpad driver that has caused this problem was this one. It just opens to a page, not the download link.

In a previous question, I asked about the Touchpad files that are in the Programs Folder. As you are concentrating on the files in the system32 folder only, I wonder if that means that the file(s) that are causing this problem are only in the system32 folder and that the Touchpad files in the Program Folder are for the cosmetic stuff, like three finger scroll/zoom/rotate/etc?

While you are fixing this problem for me, I also wish to learn from it and understand more of what files do what.

That is great that you are still interested in learning. Please ask any questions you like. The driver list did not include the paths to the drivers. Let’s try again with some extra switches as shown below and it should look similar the enclosed screenshot. Upload the new file.
