    SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION crashes

I have run into an issue over the past few weeks and I can not seem to narrow down what the problem is even after reviewing many other threads involving this topic I can't figure this out.

    I'll start with specs...
    I7-4790k
    Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK
    16GB Gskill DDR3
    Samsung EVO 860 SSD
    EVGA 970 SC
    Win10 Pro 64bit

I am having frequent BSOD usually saying SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. It is hit or miss with games. Sometimes I can play for a few minutes sometimes a few hours. I also frequently crash while watching youtube.

As far as troubleshooting I have done a clean fresh install of Win 10 Pro 64bit. The problem persisted. I ran a memory check which came back with a few errors, usually in test 13. I swapped out with RAM from an older machine and reran Memtest86 with no errors over 8 runs. I have also tried another video card from another system and the problem still occurred.

In the off chance it was a USB port issue I have disconnected all peripherals other than the keyboard, mouse, and USB dongle for my wireless headset. I also relocated them to USB ports I don't normally use.

From what I have read it may be some sort of driver issue. I have saved some of the dump files associated with the crashes. I had a MS rep remote into my system and they reverted me to an older version of windows and said it was a driver issue with that version yet they never checked any driver versions or reviewed any of the dump files. Lets just say the problem continues.

Attached is the file generated by the collection tool. Any help would be appreciated as I am about to just slam my head into the wall trying to solve this problem I'm trying to not start throwing parts at the problem especially with RAM and GPU prices right now.

The problem appears to have changed somewhat. The conditions in which my system has a BSOD have not changed, however, I now see a lot more IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Attached is the latest file generated by the collection tool.

Please, any help would be appreciated. I really don't know what else to do at this point.

Are you aware that you are running with Driver Verifier enabled. This is not a good think to have running constantly and may well be why you are getting some of the recent BSODs. I would turn it off and see how you get on.

Was Driver Verifier something that the MS rep turned on?

If so you will need to refer to this tutorial; for help on turning it off:

Thanks for checking it out. The verifier was enabled on and off the last few days after reading some similar threads in other forums. The BSOD issues predated that. The MS rep just checked some version and system info and rolled me back. They never checked the dump files or ran any utilities. It was a big waste of time.

I turned off the verifier. Worked for about 30 minutes and the system locked up. No BSOD just froze the image and everything browsing in chrome. I had to hard reset. When I get off work tomorrow I'll try to sit down and do some more testing and report back. Aside from the verifier did anything stand out?

Finally got a chance to sit down and test. The SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION BSOD is still occuring. All I was doing was browsing this time. Attached is an updated file from the collection tool. Who crashed only shows the following.....

On Sun 5/27/2018 7:54:52 PM your computer crashed or a problem was reported
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\052718-3328-01.dmp

This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

All I can find by looking through the logs is that the BSOD seems to occur immediately after some kind of background disk check has completed. If @axe0 has the time to take a look perhaps he can shed some light on it. It might be worth following up - do you have any particular disk maintenance tasks scheduled and can you try changing when they happen?

None that I am aware of. The only drives I have installed are a brand new Samsung Evo 860 500GB SSD with a fresh windows install +windows updates, drivers and only a couple of programs and games, and a LG Blu-ray drive. The problem predated this SSD and happened on the windows install and reinstall on that drive(Samsung Evo 850 500GB). Now that you mention disk maintenance I did have an older mechanical HD(non OS, just storage) fail after the problems started which I completely forgot about and is no longer in the system and was removed prior to this windows install.

I also did a default reset of the BIOS after the problems started. Latest available BIOS(version F8) for this board.

    Hi JD53,

Could you use a different sata port for your SSD as a test please.
I have a hunch this might be a motherboard related issue, but I would like to perform 1 or more tests first based on something I noticed related to the drive.

I will give it a try tomorrow. If it doesn't work I will try to change the SATA port on the Blu Ray drive and then take that drive out of the equation if changing ports doesn't work.

If it doesn't work which tests do you want me to run? I have some free time tomorrow after I get off of work to run a few.

If it doesn't work, the only other test that you can run is a PSU test, i.e. measuring the voltages of the PSU. A quick way is to check the 3.3v, 5v and 12v values in the BIOS and see if they are within a range of 5% (e.g. 3.3v between 3.135 & 3.465). Software like HWinfo is not recommended, because they may be very off (as is the case on my pc).

Since there are basically only a few parts left, that haven't been tested (yet) and all tested parts connect via the motherboard I, again a hunch, would think the motherboard needs to be replaced as there is no proper test for the motherboard.
It is possible that the CPU or PSU is bad, but to me it seems more likely that the motherboard is causing all the trouble.
