Let's see if this method can improve the boot failure.

Sometimes fixing the registry can improve or fix boot problems.
For this method (registry backup) to work the file sizes must be substantial.
If the file sizes display 0 then the backup will fail and you can abort the commands.

All of these commands are via the windows 10 iso windows advanced troubleshooting menu > command prompt > administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe > X:\Sources>

Please use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images of the results into the thread.

    1) type or copy and paste: cd \windows\system32\config
    It should display: C:\windows\system32\config>
    2) type: dir
It should display: bbi, bcd-template, components, default, drivers, elam, sam, security, software, system, vsmidk, journal, regback, systemprofile txr, etc.
All of the file sizes should be sizeable. If it displays zeros then abort.
Make a new directory and name it backup5122018 or something similar.
    3) type: MD backup5122018
Copy all of the files into this new directory.
    4) type or copy and paste: copy *.* backup5122018
It should now display: bbi, bcd-template, components, default, drivers, elam, sam, security, software, system, vsmidk indicating the files were copied.
    Change the directory to regback
    5) type: cd regback
    It should now display: c:\windows\system32\config\regback>
    6)type: dir
It should display: default, sam, security, software, system etc
All of these files must be sizeable. If it displays zeros then abort.
    7) type or copy and paste: copy *.* ..
    It should now display:
    DEFAULT
    Overwrite ..\default? (yes/no/all):
    8) type: a
It should now display: sam, security, software, system and that the files were copied.
    9) type: exit
    10) click turn off your PC
Remove the USB flash drive if you had changed your boot order. Otherwise you can leave it and power on your computer.

Ran the first command but it didn't show C:\windows\system32\config> like you said so that's all I've done for now.

Open command prompt > X:\sources> (complete the steps in the first image of post #5)
    1) bcdedit /enum
    2) bcdedit | find "osdevice"
    3) C:
    4) dir
    5) cd \windows\system32\config
then continue with the commands in post #11

All right, ran the commands. No luck, PC is still restarting before anything to do with Windows loads.

I press the power button and the following happens:

The computer makes a high-pitched beep, bios screen pops up (hit del for bios settings, f8 for boot devices, etc.), screen goes black for a couple seconds, then turns blue (not a BSOD but my monitor is reading no signal input) and makes a high-pitch beep again and restarts. Repeat. However bios screen doesn't pop up after successive restarts and just goes straight to a blue screen

    All fans are spinning too

Can you get into the BIOS settings and try loading optimised defaults for your system? Sometimes this can help although I suspect it is more of a boot record issue and @zbook is working through that angle.

I actually reset the BIOS a couple days ago because I was having trouble loading the windows USB tool. All I changed after that was putting the SATA interface back to AHCI, which is what it was before.

    Thanks phil

    So the computer is posting?
    POST troubleshooting steps
    Then it is BSOD?
Were you able to see an error message or bugcheck?
What changes were there after the command prompt steps?
Are you able to boot into safe mode?

It is posting I think, it just won't load windows. I don't see any error messages anywhere or any blue screens, I'm really confused what's happened but I think it's clear that the update did this. When I load my installation media it says "It looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media. If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. If you want to perform a clean installation instead click No." If I click Yes the looping just keeps happening.

If I click No it takes me to the usual installation/repair stuff that we've tried. If I go into CMD and type bcdedit so I can use the steps from here (Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials) to boot into safe mode, I get an error saying something like the external volume has been altered (the error is in one of the images I have previously posted here).

If I try to install Windows using the installation media it only shows up one of my HDDs as an option, and not the SSD. At this point I'm happy to clean reinstall Windows and lose the data that is on my SSD (although not my HDDs). If you can't think of any other fixes, how can I fresh install windows 10? Is there a way to erase my SSD from outside Windows?

Also, how do I know if my PC isn't posting? I can get into the BIOS and change settings around, and it loads the installation media fine most of the time (sometimes it wasn't loading and got stuck on the Windows logo, but atm its fine) so I assume it's posting. I might try unplugging the HDDs and see if that works. I know I have a budget motherboard and I have made some minor changes to the system over time like adding an SSD for the OS and using 2 HDDs as storage devices. The PC also only uses sata @ 3.0gbps.

Sorry for the wall of text :)
