Backup any files that you may need on the drive.
If you continue to use the drive you may have unexpected data loss.
If you are able to use Macrium you can make backup images and then get the longest use of the problematic drive.

It is recommended that you replace the drive.

I don't mean to hijack a thread, just add some (possibly?) relevant info:

I too have had 2 laptops (Lenovo and HP) go into the dreaded Auto Repair / Fail loop shortly after installing January Windows updates. Coincidence? Maybe.

I also get the same message at zbook's step 36 whether booting into the local recovery command prompt, or a Windows 10 install USB stick:
    Code:
DISM does not support servicing a Windows Vista RTM or earlier operating system.
If the operating system is supported check that SSShim.DLL is present.
I could not fix the Lenovo, so after a week of failed troubleshooting, I gave up and did a factory restore after extensive hardware tests found no flaws. With the HP, I would really like to run DISM offline, but the above error is preventing me. I guess I'll start a new thread, but thought the recent Windows Updates (particularly any Spectre and/or Meltdown patches) may(?) be relevant to this thread. I wish I had an easy way to pull the drive and diagnose it in another computer.

zbook, your instructions are delightfully comprehensive and thorough. Respect!

    Hi moss99,

If this recovery image is a backup of the OS, then you need a USB with HP recovery software to boot from in order to restore the image.

The recovery software is different from the recovery image, you need the hp recovery software on the USB.

The hp recovery software should be able to read the image of your hard drive so you don't need to have the image on your USB.

The recovery software should be able to access it from anywhere on the disk. No need to move it.
