Installing Updates Led to the Windows 10 Blue Screen of Death?

    Hello,

I was putting my laptop into sleep mode and the I noticed the power-light wouldn't turn off. I tried everything to get it into sleep mode, unfortunately I had to resort to a hard power off.

The next day, I booted up my laptop and it said, "Windows is working on updates". Shortly after, I was presented with a frowny face and message telling me my computer couldn't handle a problem. (I've attached a photo of the general image) Attachment 173498

Since then, everything seems to be working now. In fact, I'm typing this post from my laptop. There are occasional graphic hiccups like icons loading weirdly and "stuttering" but that may have been happening before and I just didn't notice.

Should I do anything about this? A system restore or could that worsen any underlying issues?

I know this sounds far-fetched but I'm worried that this could affect my online accounts or leave my system vulnerable.
I've scanned my computer with Avast! and Malwarebytes and both programs found no issues in terms of viruses.

Thanks for reading my post and I hope I can get some insight from experienced users on the forum. :)

    Hello,

My best guess is that you happened to put your laptop to sleep just as it was in the middle of an update installing in the background. Windows would have delayed the transition to sleep mode until the update was completed but you forced it to shutdown and power off. When restarting the next day, Windows attempted to complete the update but ran into a problem that required a restart. Hopefully it corrected the problem automatically but it would be worth checking that you did in fact update to the latest version.

Have a look at the reliability history (type reliability in the search box and select the view history) this should show you what is being installed and updated each day. Right click on the Start button and click on System- this will show you your windows build at the bottom under Windows Specifications. Current, latest build is 16299.192

If your system is operating OK then all is well. If you are worried that any of the system files might be corrupted you can perform a system file check. See this tutorial: Run SFC Command in Windows 10
