The tests that can be done overnight are:

    chkdsk /x /f/ /r
    Memtest86+ version 5.01
    HD Tune full error scan

There was corruption on the drive file system on the first scan and it suggested chkdsk /scan.
Was the first command only chkdsk without any other switches? (no f, or r?)
Was the second chkdsk command chkdsk /scan or chkdsk /spotfix or chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r or chkdsk /x /f /r?

If possible overnight run the chkdsk command again as: chkdsk /x /f /r c:
When the results are viewed in the event viewer use the mouse to highlight > copy > paste into the thread or use a one drive drop box share link.

If there are other drivers please use the syntax: chkdsk /x /f /r c: or chkdsk /x /f /r d: and change the drive letter to the applicable drive letter seen in file explorer. Please run this command to check all drives and please run HD Tune on all drives.

    Will do -
I am not sure the chkdsk scans were complete - they did not take long. Were run with the /x /f /r tags.
trouble was getting the scan to run at all because "the volume is in use by another process". I've signed out of my own account and logged in as an admin but I think that is the problem

When using the chkdsk commands they can be run while the drive is not locked or while it is locked.
The locking allows a better assessment and fix of the drive file structure.

This is what should be seen when using the chkdsk /x /f /r switches:

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /x /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: y
    reboot

This command can take many hours on a HD. For a SSD it is substantially shorter.

Done this several times - the chkdsk seems to stop at 13% and then the computer boots normally - only takes 5 minutes for the entire process and the event does not appear in the log - the events are all from yesterday.
I can't seem to find another process to stop to allow the chkdsk to run immediately
