I get a message, in red, that no print job has been sent. i can get it to print from my smartphone. Also. if I move the email from the inbox on the laptop to say the spam box; it will print from there!. I can print web pages.

Not sure if this will resolve but have you tried re-register the Mail app?

Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10
Ensure you have restore points enabled and create one prior to making any changes.

Thanks for offering a possible solution to the problem. What has happened now is that it is suddenly working again - without doing anything to correct it.
