With a default installation update addons should check daily but there will be no addon updates if none are available.

Regarding program updates - tested on my work machine using "Use a background service to install updates" and "Automatically install updates (recommended)" works to install program updates. The only notification being on launch when a program update is installed.

I suppose that security software, HOSTS file or Firewall could interfere with updates.

Recent update has resulted in problem during opening pages. It does not open pages properly. Hangs in the middle. After disabling hardware acceleration in options, it works ok. But why this problem.

Usually it's a graphics card or graphics driver issue. Disabling hardware acceleration is recommended when you don'y have a decent spec graphics card or updated graphics driver. Sometimes it's down to the manufacturer to fix their driver and release an update.

Also if you have always updated Firefox multiple times (every time a new version is released) instead of backing up your profile and doing a clean Firefox install you can expect problems eventually.

I have Intel HD graphics 4000. I have latest driver. Still the problem exists. I will try clean install.

Sometimes rolling back the drive to one that worked is sufficient if the latest has introduced a bug. Then sit back and wait for the bug to be fixed and a newer driver to be issued.

I uninstalled Firefox using revo uninstaller. However it left mozilla folders in user AppData. I removed them also. I downloaded installer. Installer downloaded only 32 bit firefox. Hence again I have to download directly 64-bit installer and install. Though now hardware accelerator works, I have some other problems.
    1) From my Appdata folder, I saved chrome folder. I put back the same folder after clean install. But previously I had 8 columns in newtab top sites. Now I have only 6 default columns. I changed in about:config also to 8 columns. Still I get only 6 columns.
    2) When I click the link for tenforums from my mail, I don't get tenforums link show that page. It shows some garbled page. Then I opened ten forums from my bookmark and I got the link also opens full page.
3)I wanted to set Firefox as default browser. In settings|default apps|web browser list does not contain firefox. How to get firefox in that list.

Always backup profile before updating or clean installing Firefox:

    Hekasoft Backup & Restore Download
Use it to backup your current FF Profile. Or use this:

    MozBackup

RE: Chrome folder. You'd need some elements your old profile too.

RE: Mail and default browser settings. Use Control Panel File Associations.

    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations

RE: Email. Set option in FF to whatever you need. (for email links in browser)

You must still be on 1703 it that's a screenshot from your PC. Clicking on 'Set associations' in Control Panel in 1709 now opens the Settings App instead of that page. Or are you using one of the command line shortcuts to open the hidden Control Panel option? If so, I have some bad news for you. That is going to be removed completely in 1803, and recent updates for 1709 have turned it 'Read-Only' - you can see the settings, even tick a few boxes, but nothing gets changed when you click 'Save'.

See this thread lamenting their loss: Classic Default Programs not working anymore

The replacement pages in Settings are clumsy and laborious to use
